Celebrities who spend millions on making a difference

By | Featured, Films, Music

This is a list of the top ten stars that utilise their position of fame and fortune to make a positive change in the world. They donate millions of dollars every year and dedicate massive amounts of their time to the causes they believe in.

en-charitycelebrities-1 en-charitycelebrities-2

Angelina Jolie – Hollywood’s highest paid actress is a fully-fledged diplomat who uses her star power to draw significant attention to issues which may otherwise slip through the mainstream press. Jolie represents the UN Refugee Agency to other diplomats, governments and officials around the world. The oscar-winning actress first became personally aware of worldwide humanitarian crises while filming Tomb Raider in Cambodia. She promotes various causes, including conservation, education, and women’s rights, and is most noted for her advocacy on behalf of refugees as a Special Envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). As a public figure, Jolie has been cited as one of the most influential and powerful people in the American entertainment industry, a very useful tool when your goal is to make the world a better place.

Since 2001, Jolie has been on field missions around the world and met with refugees in more than 20 countries, including Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Cambodia, Pakistan, Thailand, Ecuador, Kosovo, Kenya, Namibia, Sri Lanka, North Caucasus, Jordan, Egypt, New Delhi, Costa Rica, Chad, Syria, Iraq and Haiti. The political meetings she attends and speaks at represents the powerful stature she holds in the world; speaking alongside international political leaders and highly influential intellectuals. As well as all her good work Jolie donates huge amounts of money; a large percentage of her earnings goes to all the various organisations and causes that she believes in so strongly. The Maleficent star reportedly donates all proceeds from any photographs the press buy of her and her family to charity, including the whopping $5 million received for her wedding photos.

Elton John – Sir Elton has seen many of his close friends die from HIV/AIDS over the years, and established the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) in 1992 to try to stem the destruction the disease causes around the world. To raise extra money for this foundation he holds a ball every year in his own home. The White Tie and Tiara party brings in a lot of cash from its celebrity guest list as do his post-Grammy and Oscar parties. He began his fund raising for HIV/AIDs back in the mid-80’s having lost many dear friends to the disease. EJAF has managed to raise more than $125 million which not only provides support for sufferers but funds prevention and education plus assistance on reducing discrimination and prejudice against those living with it. Elton not only raises the funds himself but he also forks out a lot of his own money towards all different charities. In 1997 $40 million was raised by the version of Candle in The Wind which he released in honour of Princess Diana just after her death. In 2004 he gave $43 million to various organisations. In 2008 he provided 120 motorbikes for doctors and nurses to be able to reach patients in the remote areas in Lesotho, Africa. All this makes Elton one of the most generous celebrities in the world.

en-charitycelebrities-5 en-charitycelebrities-6

Bono – The U2 frontman is not only the leader of a band he is a leader in the fight against poverty and is regularly in contact with world leaders assisting his mission to improve the ways of the world. After meeting with President Sarkozy of France the president not only promised to restore 20 million Euros cut from the Global Fund to fight AIDS TB and malaria, he also said he would send through a plan to restore promised French aid trajectories in the next few weeks.
He has helped to launch many campaigns such as the ONE Campaign, DATA (Debt AIDS Trade Africa), (RED) (another AIDS charity) and EDUN (a clothing company which creates trade with poverty stricken countries). His early work began in Ethiopia where he and his wife created an education programme, then Nicaragua and El Salvador with the aim to help children. He helped to organise Amnesty International’s Conspiracy Of Hope tour in 1986. Following this he became involved in the Band Aid, Live Aid and later Live 8 events and projects with Bob Geldof. He often used his music to deliver messages and has written countless poignant songs with political themes, such as anti Apartheid song Silver and Gold. Bono received a knighthood from the Queen in 2007 and has been nominated for three Nobel Peace prizes.

en-charitycelebrities-7 en-charitycelebrities-8

Oprah Winfrey – Oprah is a giver. She has truly established herself as an altruistic person dedicated to improving others’ lives. She has donated millions to many different charities such as the Clinton Foundation, Projet Cuddle and Free The Children, but generally focusses on three self-founded causes; The Angel Network, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation and The Oprah Winfrey Operating Foundation. The Angel Network, which she has used her talk show to publicise, is a charity designed to fund specific projects all over the world, such as Rebuilding the Gulf Coast and an Academy for girls in South Africa. ALL proceeds received by this foundation go towards such projects. The Oprah Winfrey Foundation is funded by an endowment and run exclusively by Oprah herself. She dedicates so much of her time and money to making the world a better place to live, helping others, and rebuilding broken lives. It is claimed that in her will she has left $1 billion to charity, so not only is she one of the most generous and conscientious celebrities on the planet she has become one of the greatest philanthropists of this Century.

en-charitycelebrities-9 en-charitycelebrities-10

Ellen Degeneres – She lives up to her generous sounding name supporting many different organisations around the world and has won many awards for her charity work. She launched the Small Change Campaign alongside actor Ben Affleck to help benefit feeding America. She currently supports thirty-four different charities and non-profit organisations varying from Red Cross to STOMP Out Bullying. During the month of October, Ellen’s, Ellen for the Cure, campaign runs on her show to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Ellen is also widely known for her love of animals and her attempts to work with animal rights. Her show alone has managed to raise more than $50 million which she donated to various good causes.

Ellen uses her talk show as a way to help struggling families and individuals. Ellen has been included in TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women and Entertainment Weekly’s 50 Most Powerful Entertainers. At the end of every episode Ellen finishes by saying, “Be kind to one another”, which promotes, not only being kind, but also treating everyone fairly and equally. Though they may not be traditional, Ellen DeGeneres does many things in her life that make her an excellent example of a modern day prophet.

en-charitycelebrities-11 en-charitycelebrities-12

Brad Pitt – The other half of the Brangelina super duo is also no stranger to a charitable attitude. The father of six has become increasingly involved in environmental projects in the States and globally. He utilises his knowledge of architecture to assist in building environmentally friendly structures all over the world. Following the destruction brought by Hurricane Katrina, he became involved in designing and building eco-friendly, affordable large scale housing sites to help those affected by the disaster. “We’ve got to push to get these levees taken care of in the correct fashion,” Pitt told reporters at a news conference in the hurricane-ravaged working class neighbourhood. Brad generously donated $5 million. In October 2008, the first six homes were completed. In March 2009, Pitt met with US President Barack Obama and Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, promoting his concept of “green housing” as a national model, and discussed possibilities of federal funding. His commitment to aiding humanitarian causes all over the world is admirable and tireless, in 2006 he and his wife Angelina Jolie (co-founders of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation) gave over $8 million to various charities such as Doctors Without Borders, a UN refugee agency, African relief organisations, he doesn’t just give money, he also gives his time and resources and care.

en-charitycelebrities-13 en-charitycelebrities-14

George Clooney – Founder of Not On Our Watch, George Clooney seems to have one of the most charitable hearts in Hollywood, alongside his co-founders and co-stars of Ocean’s Eleven Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle and Matt Damon, plus producer Jerry Weintraub. This organisation is against genocide in Sudan and focuses on helping the poverty stricken sufferers in the affected areas. Human rights activist Clooney has visited the region and spoken personally with victims of rape, torture, poverty and desperation. Thanks to his influence and the pull of the famous faces involved the charity has donated millions of dollars (substantial amounts of which came from Clooney himself) to the affected people alongside the Untied Nations World Food Programme.

His belief in the cause stretches as far as auctioning himself in order to raise funds for charity. At the movie premiere party for Ocean’s 13 he offered up his own personal time to hang out with the highest bidder, all proceeds of which went to Realising The Dream, which continues the work started by Dr. & Mrs King to help eradicate poverty and injustice. Thanks to his dedication, support and consistent donations he was named United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2008 to help raise awareness for peacekeeping around the world. Clooney also supports Bono’s charity the ONE Campaign which fights against poverty and is a trustee for the United Way, he took part in the Tribute to Heroes telethon supporting the victims of 9/11 and even got arrested during a peaceful protest at the Sudanese embassy in Washington D.C.

en-charitycelebrities-15 en-charitycelebrities-16

Inspired by her loss and in her honour he hosted PETA’s Party of the Century gala in 1999, carrying on her care work for the protection of animals. He then went on to use his talents to raise money when he wrote and released an album from which the proceeds were donated to The Garland Appeal, a fund aiding cancer patients. He has also taken part in many fundraising concerts including Live Aid, Live 8 and Concert for New York City and Concerts for the People of Kampuchea.
He supports countless charities including Adopt-A-Minefield, to which he donated $1 million which he received as payment for performing a private concert.

If you think about it, what could be better than enjoying great tasting food that is not only good for your health, but also far better for the planet and the creatures that live with us upon it?” Good old Macca has got his charitable fingers in many pies, vegetarian ones only of course!

Madonna – “It has pretty much taken over my life, and I’m so grateful it has…I’ve started an organisation called Raising Malawi…and any of your help would be greatly appreciated by me.” – Madonna. In 2006 Madonna and Michael Berg founded Raising Malawi, a non-profit organisation supporting community-based projects that provide vulnerable children and caregivers with nutritious food, proper clothing, secure shelter, formal education, targeted medical care, emotional care and psychosocial support. In addition, Raising Malawi supports non-government foundations that offer impoverished families with innovative opportunities for sustainability such as Millennium Promise (a non-profit which works towards the halving extreme poverty in Africa by 2015) and International Medical Corps (a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organisation dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs). She also works closely with SocialVibe which is a social media utility encouraging big brands to sponsor and benefit causes of their choice. She was in a story about up and coming young Londoners.Testino took a shine to Campbell as she then featured in the following Burberry campaign with the legendary Kate Moss. She blazed through Paris Fashion Week, appearing in the Balenciaga, Chanel, Givenchy, and Christian Dior shows, and also opening Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen. Not to mention the campaigns for Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Jil Sander, Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen, and Lanvin she already has under her belt. Since her signing to Storm Model Management in 2009 she has worked with Burberry, Vogue Italia, Cadbury, Tom Ford, Saint Laurent, Zara, Chanel, Moschino, D&G, Stella McCartney, DKNY, Blumarine, Clements Ribero, Shiatzy Chen, Jason Wu, Fendi, Lanvin, Dsquared, Vogue UK, Victoria’s Secret…the list is literally endless. Sam Rollinson

With a little more than a year of runway experience under her belt, Rollinson joins the ranks of Edie Campbell and Cara Delevingne as one of the hottest Brit models of the moment. Her new Louise Brooks–style bob stole the show at Rodarte and Derek Lam and gained rock ’n’ roll momentum at Anthony Vaccarello and Saint Laurent. Her best Instagram moments are usually framed with Kawaii-style emoticons and a ton of fun. You may recognise Doncaster-born Rollinson from the infamous Burberry campaigns with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Douglas Booth, but the Brit model is so much more than that campaign. Renowned for her runway strut, the model bagged slots at the major A/W13 shows in all four fashion weeks – Christopher Kane in London, Louis Vuitton in Paris, Alexander Wang in New York, and Prada in Milan. Her razor sharp bone structure and piercing blue eyes have made her a serious contender lately. She secured A/W campaigns at Sonia Rykiel and Kurt Geiger – having already had Balenciaga and Zara – and is one of the most editorially sought-after models of the moment. Although she’s running in the same circles as Cara, Rollinson has independently captured the fashion elite with her northern charm.

She has worked for Chanel, Hudson Jeans, H&M, Vivienne Westwood, Miu Miu, Rimmel and Versace. October 2014 saw Jagger appear in an international campaign for Thomas Sabo’s ‘Glam & Soul’ and ‘Karma Beads’ Ladies Collections. The short film campaign, which was widely distributed over digital and social media as well, was shot by famous fashion/rock ‘n roll photographer Ellen von Unwerth. She is a face of Brit fashion, appearing alongside all the biggest names at the Olympics closing ceremony with Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. Jagger loves her Instagram outlet, and fills it with family and friends (like Cara Delevingne) as much as she does fashion.

Kendall Jenner

You can’t help but know Kendall Jenner these days, she is everywhere. Being the sister of Kim Kardashian didn’t do any harm, but having been the lesser known of the Jenner/Kardashian family, she has made her own way in the world and made a massive name for herself having become the face of Estée Lauder, modeled for Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Chanel, and Alexander Wang and been named “World’s Coolest Woman” by GQ magazine in 2015. The Oscars 2015; all you need to know from this year’s awards ceremony

By | Featured, Music

HIGHLIGHTS: The show was opened and hosted by the comic host Neil Patrick Harris (of Doogie Howser MD, Smurfs and How I Met Your Mother fame) who produced some entertaining moments including him stripping down to his “tighty-whiteys” (a reenactment from a scene in Birdman). The stand out big winners of the night were Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel each receiving four awards. The highly acclaimed Selma was largely outside of the major Oscar running, as was the much-talked-about American Sniper. There were performances by the likes of Lady Gaga, John Legend & Common and Tegan and Sara. It was not one of the most exciting ceremonies the Oscars have ever produced, the host struggled with some of the scripted jokes falling flat, there was controversy over the nominee list containing mostly ‘white folk’, but on the whole there were some typically prestigious Oscar moments, some fantastic performances and the dresses did not disappoint.

The award ceremony has always been a stage for those wanting to deliver a poignant message during their acceptance speeches…here is the pick of the power speeches that came from last night’s show.
Patricia Arquette wins best supporting actress for Boyhood. The film was shot intermittently over the course of a 12-year period, from 2002 to 2013, and depicts the adolescence of a young boy in Texas growing up with divorced parents. Big things were expected for this movie at this year’s Oscars but Arquette received its only award. Patricia took to the stage and began to accept the award in the usual fashion but ended up urging all of the minority groups of the world to fight for women and pay equality in today’s society. “It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all!” she roars. The camera pans to Meryl Streep, wildly pumping her fist, and J-Lo sitting next to her, just as riled up.

Patricia Arquette wins Actress in a Supporting Role

Best Song winner John Legend for Selma (based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by James Bevel, Hosea Williams, and Martin Luther King, Jr. of SCLC and John Lewis of SNCC) insisted that “Selma is now, because the struggle for justice is right now. “We know that the voting rights that they fought for 50 years ago are being compromised in this country today.” He went on to say the U.S. is the most incarcerated country in the world, as “there are more black men under correctional control today than were under slavery in 1850. People are marching with our song — we see you, we love you,” he said. “March on.” Backstage Common said: “I feel like to whom much is given much is required. The fact we have an opportunity to get to a stage like the Oscars. How could you not say anything? Beyond what we have done on this song, John has always made music about love; he’s been doing things about education for a long time. I feel it’s our duty to do it.” John Legend discussed process: “Common called me. He describes what they were looking for and gave me ideas for the title of the song. ‘Glory.’ That word really inspired me. My thoughts were that the song should sound triumphant but realize there is more work to do.”

John Legend & Common – Glory (live at the Oscars 2015)

Best Adapted Screenplay winner Graham Moore — for The Imitation Game, about British cryptography genius Alan Turing who was persecuted for being gay — started things off pretty light, saying, “thank you so much to the Academy…and to Oprah!” But went on to say that he thought it was an injustice that the subject of his film, Alan Turing, “never got to stand on a stage like this with all these disconcertingly attractive faces.” He recalled considering suicide at age 16 because he felt different and like he didn’t belong, and offered hope to young people feeling the same way. “Stay weird,” he said. “Stay different and when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage, please pass the same message to the next person who comes along.”

With plenty of political issues surrounding the evening, none were perhaps as contentious as those raised by Alejandro González Iñárritu during his third acceptance speech of the night. He dedicated the best picture win for Birdman to his fellow Mexicans and called on his country to “find and build a government that we deserve”. He ends with a plea on behalf of Mexicans newly arrived in the United States, asking they be treated with the same respect as the others who came before “to help build this incredible immigrant nation”.

Julianne Moore gives a gracious and touching speech having been given the award for Best Actress for Still Alice, a film approaching the difficulties of Alzheimer’s disease. After 17 years and five nominations, it finally happened. She talks about the importance of visibility for people with Alzheimer’s, and mentions that Still Alice‘s co-writers and directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland couldn’t be there, because of Glatzer’s illness. He has ALS. The honour goes to Moore for the culmination both of her hard work playing an Alzheimer’s patient in the past year and a long career in which she’d been nominated for four previous Oscars. She also talked about shining a light on Alzheimer’s disease: “So many people with this disease feel isolated and marginalized,” she said, adding that movies make people feel seen and not alone. “And people with Alzheimer’s deserve to be seen so we can find a cure.”

It was hard not to be elated for TV veteran J.K. Simmons (The Closer, Oz, Law & Order) as he picked up the Best Supporting Actor award for Whiplash – the film stars Miles Teller as a student jazz drummer who seeks the respect of an abusive teacher played by Simmons. Things got even more feel-good when rather than reel off the standard list of “thank you” messages; he instead focused on smaller, simpler advice: “Call your mom, call your dad. If you’re lucky enough to have a parent or two alive on this planet, call ’em. Don’t text, don’t email, call them on the phone. Tell them you love them. Thank them and listen to them for as long as they wanna talk to you.”

JK Simmons wins Best Supporting Actor

The music always makes the show in show business ceremonies and this year’s Oscars was no exception.

Tegan and Sara with Andy Samberg’s Lonely Island trio (dressed in powder blue tuxedos) delivered a fast-paced, energetic, almost hallucinatory Everything Is Awesome the ridiculously catchy song that kicked off The Lego Movie. They get some help from actual lego characters along with a giant chorus including Will Arnett dressed as Batman and Questlove. That definitely woke up and shook up the audience.

Tegan and Sara & The Lonely Island perform Everything Is Awesome

Lady Gaga performed a medley from The Sound of Music to celebrate its 50th anniversary. She hit the high notes, belting out The Hills Are Alive, before launching into a rendition of My Favorite Things and slowing things down for Edelweiss and Climb Every Mountain. It may seem like a madcap idea but Gaga is no stranger to the strange and actually delivered the classic musical tunes perfectly and managed to exclude her personal oddities from the stage for a change. Julie Andrews also came onstage to say a few words, “It’s hard to believe that 50 years have gone by,” she said. “How lucky can a girl get?”

Lady Gaga performs The Sound of Music

John Legend’s performance of Glory with Common was one of those extremely rare Oscar musical numbers that managed to reproduce the emotion of the movie (Selma) onstage. With the power of the music and a recreation of the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge the audience was reduced to complete silence (and some tears) in this emotional and powerful production.

John Legend & Common perform Glory

Jennifer Hudson delivered a beautiful performance of I Can’t Let Go during a tribute to those who died last year from the movie industry.

Rita Ora gave Beyond The Lights, one of many under-appreciated movies this year, its moment of the night when she belted out the ballad Grateful from the film.

Top 10 banned album covers of all time!

By | Featured, Music

Album covers have often been used as attention seeking shock tactics to get a public reaction, but the following are an example of where statement marketing can go really wrong. Be warned these images may well be quite disturbing or explicit…which, in turn serves for the title of this article. The covers chosen for the following albums are ones that were banned from the shelves due to certain factors being inappropriate or, let’s face it, harmful to the eyes, morals or feelings. Warning; the images get worse as the list goes on!

10. The Black Crowes – Amorica (1994)
The major superstores in the States were unified in their reaction to the third album release by the Crowes back in 1994. Their album cover; previously featured on the cover of Hustler in July, 1976, featured a close up of a female’s crotch wearing Star Spangled Banner underwear and pubic hair spilling over the top. This shock tactic may have backfired on them as the momentum surrounding their release was somewhat diminished by the time they managed to replace the artwork, but they still achieved success as Amorica eventually reached Gold status in the United States, shipping 500,000 copies.

9. The Beatles – Yesterday and Today (1966)
There was so much controversy over the picture on the cover of this 1970’s album that it was even given the name “The butcher cover”. Its fame put The Beatles squeaky clean image in jeopardy for the first time and questioned their judgement towards the media. The members of the band claimed that it was a breath of fresh air to be able to do a photo shoot that was a little off the wall and different to their usual requirements. They were tired of being the model citizens and this arty shoot let them loose for a few hours. They should’ve stuck with the lego hair cuts and matching good boy suits as the conceptual art piece was removed from circulation, 750,000 copies being recalled and costing Capitol Records $250,000. Despite the profit loss the album went to number one anyway and made up for the losses, and then some.

en-bannedalbumcovers-3 en-bannedalbumcovers-4

8. Guns N Roses – Appetite for Destruction (1987)
Labelled as the best metal record of the late 80’s, Appetite for Destruction was the debut album by Guns N’ Roses. There was many an anthem born of this album; Sweet Child O’ Mine, Paradise City, Welcome to the Jungle to name a few. The original album cover was considered even darker than the tone of the music itself depicting a robotic rapist about to be punished by a metal avenger. After being refused by several big retailers it was later replaced with some more light hearted skulls visuals. They did however manage to slip the original artwork (based on a painting by Robert Williams) on the inside of the cover.

en-bannedalbumcovers-5 en-bannedalbumcovers-6

7. The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Electric Ladyland (1968)
When it was released in 1968 this album didn’t make the biggest waves but has since been considered some of Jimi’s best work, joining the top 500 albums of all time on the Rolling Stone list and Q Magazine’s top 100 list. It includes one of his most famous songs All Along The Watchtower, a Bob Dylan cover, but this isn’t all its famous for; the initial album cover was rejected by retailers and Hendrix himself for being pornographic and disrespectful. Some sold it with the cover inside out, but the cover was replaced with a red, blurry picture of Jimi’s head.

en-bannedalbumcovers-7 en-bannedalbumcovers-8

6. John Lennon & Yoko Ono – Unfinished Music No. 1. : Two Virgins (1968)
This one didn’t even make it to the eyes of any public since the record company EMI refused to put it out due to the full on nudity of Lennon and Ono. The album didn’t receive much critical acclaim but it did come in a brown paper bag so all the naughty bits were covered up! The origin of the album itself was made under a cloud as Lennon had invited Ono to visit him while his wife was away on a holiday in Greece; they ended up recording this album and sleeping together which in turn ended his previous relationship. The content of the album reflects their avant-garde attitude at the time, it was an experimental project as was their decision to appear nude on the cover which evidently backfired. The album did not achieve major success but to this day remains famous for its story and their brazenness!

en-bannedalbumcovers-9 en-bannedalbumcovers-10

5. Roxy Music – Country Life (1974)
This album did pretty well; it got to the top ten in the UK and it is the first that cracked the US for the band. However, the risqué album cover they initially released is another story. It featured two beautiful young women wearing extremely revealing, well, let’s face it see through, underwear in front of some trees. The position of the models is nothing short of provocative and thus the reaction in the US, Spain and The Netherlands was to reject the original cover. The models were consequently removed and, rather unimpressively, only the trees remained leaving what could actually have been the cover of the namesake of the record Country Life Magazine.

en-bannedalbumcovers-11 en-bannedalbumcovers-12

4. Hurricane – Slave to The Thrill (1990)
In 1990 the 80’s heavy metal band Hurricane released their second album Slave To The Thrill. The original artwork for the album cover was banned due to the explicit portrayal of a woman lying straddled on a machine that looks as though she is about to be mechanically drilled by. It was swiftly disapproved of and replaced by the same picture minus the female form. Not quite as high-impact but much more socially acceptable.

en-bannedalbumcovers-13 en-bannedalbumcovers-14

3. Marilyn Manson – Holy Wood in the Shadow of the Valley of Death (2000)
The press had brutally attacked Manson for directly influencing the killers of the April 1999 Columbine High School massacre, accusations which were later revoked entirely but the damage was done. To follow up the barrage of unfair accusations Manson wrote Holy Wood in the Shadow of the Valley of Death where he explored American hypocrisy, culture and values up against the national acceptance of violence. Due to the nature of the songs on the album many retail stores already had a problem stocking the album, some only agreeing if the album cover was changed.
“The irony is that my point of the photo on the album was to show people that the crucifixion of Christ is, indeed, a violent image. In fact, the picture itself is composed of a statue of Jesus taken from a place of worship. My jaw is missing as a symbol of this very kind of censorship. This doesn’t piss me off as much as it pleases me, because those offended by my album cover have successfully proven my point.”

en-bannedalbumcovers-15 en-bannedalbumcovers-16

2. Pantera – Far Beyond Driven (1994)
Not renowned for their nice and friendly album covers, the artwork on Far Beyond Driven went far beyond the censors approval and was rapidly replaced – the drill bit impaling an anus (!) was removed and instead a human head stood impaled in its stead which was considered less offensive! All gore aside the album actually struck gold being the first extreme metal album to top the Billboard 200 chart,

en-bannedalbumcovers-17 en-bannedalbumcovers-18

1. Scorpions – Virgin Killer (1976)
And if you thought that one was bad, the next one is seriously disturbing in all manners of…WHY? and HOW COULD YOU? Thankfully this one was changed before many could set their eyes on it but those who did were mortified that anyone could reach a verdict that this was a good decision. The fourth album by heavy metal band Scorpions depicted a prepubescent girl in the nude except for the shattered glass which obscured her genitalia; the title‘s meaning being that time is the killer of innocence. The image was considered to be potentially illegal under the Protection of Children Act 1978.

The band members thought that the lyrics justified the image when they claimed, “We didn’t actually have the idea. It was the record company. The record company guys were like, ‘Even if we have to go to jail, there’s no question that we’ll release that.’ We’re using this only to get attention. That’s what we do.’ The lyrics really say it all. Time is the virgin killer. A kid comes into the world very naive, they lose that naiveness and then go into this life losing all of this getting into trouble. That was the basic idea about all of it.

However in 2008 the same band member stated “Looking at that picture today makes me cringe. It was done in the worst possible taste. Back then I was too immature to see that. Shame on me — I should have done everything in my power to stop it. The song has a totally different meaning from what people would assume at first. Virgin Killer is none other than the demon of our time, the less compassionate side of the societies we live in today — brutally trampling upon the heart and soul of innocence.

The controversy generated around this album cover meant that it was sold sealed in black plastic and in some countries replaced entirely. It has been named “worst album cover of all time” and “most controversial album cover of all time”.

Megastar Musicians; the ‘faces’ of the super brands

By | Featured, Music

This could look like a list of Grammy awards winners, including one for lifetime achievement award, but no, its our top ten list of the mega stars of the music industry that are currently rocking the world of advertising…what better way for a brand to create a high impact buzz than to enlist the biggest names in the business as the ‘face’ of their product?

Celebrity casting is not a new phenomenon but with social media so strong the big brands need to stay ahead of the game and one-up man-ship is what they’re playing. Being the ‘face’ of a big brand name used to belong to your everyday model but these days the advertising world need high profile power players to promote their new products. Today’s faces are celebrity A-lister superstars and not only from the modelling and acting worlds but also the famous musicians of the world are turning their hand to posing in front of the camera in order to boost brand images.

en-celebritycastings-1 en-celebritycastings-2

1. RIHANNA: The Barbadian beauty is no stranger to pouting for the camera and has appeared in next to nothing in many an ad. She is currently starring as not only the face of PUMA but has also been made Creative Director of the German sports brand. Puma originally planned to sponsor a female athlete but found “few [female] athletes with global appeal. Market research shows that Rihanna, although she’s not an athlete, is an icon for our main target group,” Puma Chief Executive Bjørn Gulden said during an interview. “She is putting strength to the brand in an era when we need it.”

en-celebritycastings-3 en-celebritycastings-4 en-celebritycastings-5

2. JENNIFER LOPEZ: Another A list superstar that has looked at a lens more times than she’s had hot dinners. Not only does JLo have her own labels to promote but she is currently the face of Kohls for their S/S collection this year. She released a few sneak peak photos on Instagram, the full shoot is not yet out.

3. KATY PERRY: Straight after smashing her performance at the Super Bowl a new Covergirl ad was released with her wearing different coloured wigs and accents. Katy is the face of Covergirl and claims that she considers make-up to be a “powerful creative avenue of self-expression”.

en-celebritycastings-7 en-celebritycastings-8 en-celebritycastings-9

4. LADY GAGA: For Shiseido’s 2015 campaign, Mother Monster is acting as both the photographer and model with the ads featuring 50 of the self-taken beauty shots adorning her Instagram. To kick off the New Year on a stylish note, the brand launched the photos and placed the ads in Japanese newspapers, and released the remaining four shortly after.

en-celebritycastings-10 en-celebritycastings-11

5. JUSTIN BIEBER: The naughty pop star has been caught with his pants down many a time but now he is getting paid for it. His penchant for getting down to his Calvins has prompted them to formally make Bieber the face (and the rest) for Calvin Klein. Lucky us we will all be seeing even more of young Justin than ever.

en-celebritycastings-12 en-celebritycastings-13 en-celebritycastings-14

6. RITA ORA: The lovely Rita has flitted and flirted from one designer to another but that ad campaign she did for Cavalli with the Marilyn Monroe style platinum bob proved that music and fashion can deliver matches made in heaven.

en-celebritycastings-15 en-celebritycastings-16

7. MILEY CYRUS: MAC Viva Glam has taken on the tongue-poking-twerker for the face of their latest ad campaign. The pop princess brings her massive following and her popsicle coloured lips as the spokesperson for MAC’s annual lipstick campaign. The young pop singer’s creations include a palette of bright pinks with a lipstick in Hot Pink (Amplified) and a Sparkling Pearl lipgloss and the shoot portrays her as scantily clad and sultry. For a change.

8. KANYE WEST: Not averse to taking to the ‘frow’ Kanye West is a dapper rapper and has always had a foot in the fashion door. He and his headliner reality TV wife Kim Kardashian are the faces of Balmain France S/S 2015 collection and their shoot is smoking hot.

en-celebritycastings-18 en-celebritycastings-19 en-celebritycastings-20

9. NICKI MINAJ: The Anaconda star’s first high fashion campaign is here; the S/S collection for Cavalli will incorporate the singer/rapper in their classic animal print. She delivers a touch of curvaceous class as well as a little Minaj edginess.

en-celebritycastings-21 en-celebritycastings-22 en-celebritycastings-23

10. JONI MITCHELL: Saint Laurent are going back to the 70’s and that notion just got more proof when they signed Joni Mitchell to be a face on their ad campaign for S/S 2015. The West Coast icon from back in the day shows that growing older gracefully is something to behold, also holding a guitar and a face that has seen the world from many angles.

The Grammys 2015 – Everything You Need to Know

By | Featured, Music

The Grammys 2015 – Music’s biggest night of the year took place last night (February 8) in The Staples Centre, Los Angeles. The 57th Grammy Awards ceremony was hosted, for the fourth time, by L.L. Cool J and what a night it was. All the stars flocked to L.A. to celebrate a lot of musical awesomeness and rock out to the biggest names in the business.  Some of the highlights were Sam Smith dominated by taking home four awards and Kanye West, Rihanna and Paul McCartney’s stunning performance of “FourFiveSeconds.” Rihanna also stole the show with her enormous pink dress by Giambattista Valli. Read on for more of the juicy gossip, full winners list and dresses that did and didn’t impress.

The first moment is always an important one and this year’s opening performance did not disappoint. The ceremony kicked off with a huge bang bringing on veteran rockers ACDC to the stage. They were electric and full of energy getting the crowd roaring and raring to go.

Sam Smith took home four Grammys for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year (the latter with co-writers James Napier and William Phillips) for Stay With Me (Darkchild Version) as well as Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album for In The Lonely Hour. “I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys,” Smith said on accepting his fourth award. (Tap here to play this video in Creation 5)

Some interesting and really impressive collaborations took place on stage with Tom Jones and Jesse J taking on You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling, The Voice definitely picked these two for a reason, they had a great rapport and did the song justice. Another blissful team-up came in the form of Ed Sheeran and John Mayer, massive amounts of talent managed to fit on one stage with their performance of Thinking Out Loud; now dubbed every girl’s future wedding song. Mayer even managed to pull off a hot pink guitar! Hozier and Annie Lenox delivered a killer rendition of his Take Me To Church which all the viewers will now be hoping to find on iTunes no doubt.

H1-grammys-hozier-lennoxSpeaking of No Doubt; America’s ‘The Voice’ coaches Gwen Stefani and Adam Levine joined forces to perform a duet of the Maroon 5 hit My Heart Is Open, and although these two go head-to-head on the TV show, they’re absolutely perfect together on stage.

As previously mentioned Rihanna, Kanye and Paul took to the stage and blew us away with their performance of FourFiveSeconds, all dressed in black with a white backdrop it wasn’t just the vocals that were a power statement, the crowd got on their feet and rocked out to this one. Jazzing it up were the solid duo of Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett swooning and crooning old school style to Cheek To Cheek.

More big names graced the stage throughout the star-studded evening such as Katy Perry signing By The Grace of God, Usher giving a tribute to Stevie Wonder singing If It’s Magic, Pharrell made us very Happy and even Prince made an appearance. (We’ve put some of the best video performances together towards the end of this post.)

Madonna’s performance was show stopping – any song that finishes with Madonna ascending to the heavens gets our vote. Her performance of the 90’s house-style single Living for Love sounded fantastic and was definitely a major highlight of the evening. She looked absolutely killer in her Wild West burlesque get up and brought her Givenchy-masked minotaurs along as well.

A great big OMG moment was when Saturday Night Live’s Kristen Wiig wore a blonde wig and nude leotard and danced to Sia’s performance of Chandelier creatively depicting the original video of the song. Three words for you In. Cred. Ible. She danced alongside Maddie Ziegler (star of the video) and pulled off some totally mental moves which actually worked somehow! It was gloriously strange and amusing.

An appearance from the President is always one to be remembered; Barak Obama delivered a powerful video message against domestic violence followed by a live speech from a survivor.
(Tap here to watch this video in Creation 5)

Another heart stopping moment was when Beck went up to accept his award for Album of the Year and Kanye went up too (Taylor Swift barely had a chance to accept her award for Best Female Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 13 before Kanye West rushed the stage, grabbed the microphone out of the startled teen’s hands and aired his objections. “I’m sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!”) leaving Beyonce and Jay-Z cringing in their seats for fear of what he might do this time, but it turns out it was just a joke from the acceptance speech tamperer! (To watch this video in Creation 5, just tap here.)

Another trickster in the form of Shia LaBeouf came on stage to announce that Sia was about to perform and decided to read out a love letter. Standard strangeness by our Shia then.

Beyonce eventually got her moment as Queen of the Grammys and took to the stage in a very snug white dress and belted out Take My Hand, Precious Lord. This was a show-stopper if ever there was one.

And finally…John Legend and Common got together to sing Glory which features in the award-winning movie Selma closing out the show in style.

The crowd-wowers; the best and worst-dressed awards at this year’s Grammys go to…

Nikki Minaj was smoking hot in Tom Ford, if not a little edgy and fierce.
Ariana Grande pretty princess looked great in this Versace number and high ponytail. Looking good.
Rihanna (?) Can we say much more than that?

V17-grammys-minaj V12-grammys-ariana V1-grammys-rihanna

And the cleavage awards go to…Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian.

V10-grammys-bey V3-grammys-lady-gaga V4-grammys-Kim

Charlie XCX, sorry but what were you thinking? Moschino can SO get it wrong.
Madonna looking very scary in Givenchy took to the red carpet and shook her cleavage. Ouch.
Taylor Swift totally nailed elegance, cute, cool, on the money and beauty all in one outfit by Elie Saab. She wins.

V15-grammys-XCX V2b-grammys-madonna V16-grammys-swift

Jhene Aiko looked simply stunning in this Alberta Ferretti number, not bad for your first Grammy attendance.
Annie Lennox pulls off a graceful, elegant and sleek look showing her class and maturity in one simple black dress.
Ciara looked pretty ridiculous in her Alexandre Vauthier number. It looks like a bird just flew into a passing train.

V22-grammys-jhene-aiko V20-grammys-anna-lennox V23-grammys-ciara

Chrissy Teigen looked beautiful as ever in this long white Gucci dress. Impressed.
Nick Jonas really really shouldn’t have worn this Versace suit. OR the shoes. Really.
But don’t worry John Legend can show you how its done in his smoking hot Dolce & Gabbana style.

V21-grammys-john-chrissy V24-grammys-nick-jonas

Ralph & Russo gave Jesse J a super-sleek and elegant look for the night. We like!
Pharrell can pull off any look and make it awesome. He totally rocked it again in Adidas 3M although we are not quite sure his wife Helen has the same skills, not loving the all-in-one jumpsuit sadly.
Katy Perry just really isn’t very good at this. Unfortunately even the likes of Zuhair Murad couldn’t manage to make Perry appear glamorous this time. Frumpy and spangly, sorry Katy.

V23-grammys-jessieJ V11-grammys-pharrell V5-grammys-miley-perry

Anna Kendrick, you look amazing in this black tux by Band Of Outsiders. Wow.
Gwen Stefani really got it right this year in this Custom Versace jumpsuit.
Aloe Blacc looked super-sharp in Sand Copenhagen.

Top album must-haves to be released in 2015

By | Featured, Music

Some of the biggest names in the business are set to release new albums this year; and we are all crossing our fingers to see Fleetwood Mac, Rihanna, Björk, Bob Dylan and Kanye West back on the “shelves” to make 2015 an epic year for new music. 2014 wasn’t too impressive with only the likes of Taylor Swift managing to sell millions; this year is set to knock the last out of the park. Many acts have announced potential album releases but as yet have not provided a title, we are calling them the TBA’s (to be announced); such as all of the above plus Rita Ora, Demi Lovato, and Britney Spears. So while they keep us teetering on the edges of or seats we have a huge headline of albums that are eagerly awaited or in fact already released, for 2015…so here’s the top pickings of the variety artists who have confirmed releases this year; titles and all! There’s something for everyone.

Tap any video title to open it in Creation 5

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds new album Chasing Yesterday is due to be released on the 2nd March 2015 on Gallagher’s label Sour Mash Records. This is the second album by the band formed in 2011, written and produced by Noel. The style of the album has been compared to his previous work on Definitely Maybe with Oasis. Two singles have already been released, the first being In the Heat of the Moment apparently inspired by an astronauts experiences from going into space. The second features Johnny Marr, the ex Smiths guitarist, on Ballad of the Mighty I which Gallagher claims is one of the best songs he has ever written. They previewed the album by performing four of the tracks at an initimate show in London on February 2nd. One To Another, In The Heat Of The Moment, Lock all The Doors and The Dying of The Light giving the impression that the album was going to include some classic Noel with a new Southern Blues twist. Gallagher claims to have included a mix of psychedelic, jazz, blues and rock and roll on the album, and that one track The Right Stuff is “like a mix of T Rex, The Rolling Stones and Queens of the Stone Age”.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – The Ballad Of The Mighty I from Chasing Yesterday

Bob Dylan. The lyrical king strikes again with his thirty-sixth album Shadows In The Night. However this time they are not his words, Dylan has taken ten romantic tunes by some of the greats, including Frank Sinatra, and literally transformed them into his own inventions. He did this twice before in 1992 and ’93 but this time he has reverted back to his voice from the sixties giving these songs the Blues treatment turning them into a “quietly provocative and compelling” album.

Bob Dylan – Full Moon and Empty Arms from Shadows In The Night

Mark Ronson has just released his fourth studio album Uptown Special, and it is pretty special – not only for the reason that he dedicated it to the late Amy Winehouse with whom he collaborated on her most successful album – just take a look at the line up of featured artists (Andrew Wyatt, Mystikal, Bruno Mars, Jeff Bhasker, Keyone Starr, Kevin Parker, Boys Noize and Stevie Wonder). Adding to this part of the tune Uptown’s First Finale was recorded by the marvel that is Stevie Wonder. Robson sent a melody to his agents hoping that on a wing and a prayer he might give him some input – the next thing he knows Wonder has taken it upon himself to just go ahead and record it! “Stevie Wonder actually recorded a piece of music that I wrote. I’ve listened to it a hundred times and it still messes me up when I play it”, Ronson is overwhelmed. The eleven track album has already received much critical acclaim “pop-friendly, and undeniably sexy collection of funk and R&B”, “contagious cool” and “somewhere between a chin-stroking jazz poetry recital and a riotous teenage disco” are just a few of the comments made so far.

Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk from Uptown Special

Madonna’s Rebel Heart album is due to be released in full on March 6th 2015. Online leaks of some demos of the songs were counterattacked by the Madonna team by pre-releasing six of the completed tracks thus diverting the traffic back to her own publicity. Shrewd! So, the teasers are out there to entice us into what we can expect from the raunchy queen of pop this year. Living For Love is a stripped back ballad type effigy with piano (and writing skills) from the talented Miss Alicia Keys. Avicci, Blood Diamonds, DJ Dahi and Carl Falk collaborated on Devil Prey to create a more up-tempo folk-dance track which channels the idea that drug taking doesn’t get you as deep as natural personal experience. The potential radio hit Ghost Town is a power track. Nikki Minaj worked on Unapologetic Bitch and Bitch I’m Madonna however only features on the latter, that’s a lot of bitching! Kanye West wrote Illuminati with our songstress and has come up with something rather different and worth a listen.

Madonna – Living For Love from Rebel Heart

Avicci’s much anticipated album Stories was due for release in the first quarter of 2015, due to illness he is reportedly setting the date back but it is now said to be out in the first half of this year. He released the first track The Days starring the voice of Robbie Williams in October 2014 from the album, and we have all heard Eliminate feat. Calvin Harris, so it seems he has managed to maintain his penchant for the folk, rock, country, pop, electro-dance style which he has made us grow to love.

Avicci feat. Calvin Harris – Eliminate from Stories

50 Cent’s Street King Immortal. If ever an album were intensely anticipated it has to be this one. His last album release was Before I Self Destruct way back in 2009, since then the fans have been hankering for some more ‘fiddy’ but to no avail. He started working on a rock, dance inspired album in 2010 but as it progressed his influences trailed back to his Hip-Hop roots which led him up the path of Street King Immortal and working with the likes of Alex da Kid, Bangladesh, Cardiak, Dr. Dre, Hit-Boy, Jake One, Jim Jonsin, and Just Blaze among others. Since then it has been due to be released on four different dates spanning four years with some tracks having been drip fed to us over this time frame! This is the year though that we have confirmation from 50 and G-Unit Records, Caroline Records and Capitol Records, 2015 IS the year.

50 Cent – Major Distribution from Street King Immortal

Jose Gonzalez; Vestiges and Claws is his first record since 2007! It is due for release on the 17th February and the fans are literally screaming for it. Gonzalez has not used a producer for the album claiming that he prefers the sound of his homemade music (he literally recorded this in his home in Sweden) to the crisp modern sounds of an over-produced track. The result is an inspired, eccentric, eclectic mix of modern, folk and groovy rhythm that is both confident and yet hints at trepidation. He talks about how he’s found inspiration in sprawling 70’s Brazilian productions, American folk rock and West African desert blues this time. Gonzalez, and this album, have been described as “A deep, artful thinker whose singular approach to song writing and sonics sets him worlds apart, José González is in a class by himself. He has a voice. He has a sound. He has a point of view. Vestiges & Claws — musically gorgeous, strikingly profound in lyric — has a unique and quietly visceral power that is as an outstanding addition to what is now an impressive body of work. The album is, without question, the most highly anticipated of his career”.

Album Trailer for Vestiges & Claws by Jose Gonzalez:

More albums to look out for this year;
Kid Kudi – Man on The Moon III
Limp Bizkit – Stampede of the Disco Elephants
Ludacris – Ludaversal
Muse – Drones
Coldplay – A Head Full Of Dreams
Emeli Sandé – Who Needs the World
