Black Widow Trailer – SNL

By | Films | No Comments

The latest episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL) saw Scarlett Johansson reprise her role as Black Widow, for a very different look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the Avengers: Age of Ultron soars to new box office heights SNL brilliantly mocks Marvel’s sexism in this standalone trailer.

“You wanna know, why no Black Widow movie?” a narrator growls over the trailer. “Does Marvel not know how to make a girl superhero movie? Chill! Marvel gets women.”

The Marvel superhero, played by everyone’s favourite female Avenger, Johansson, struggles to find romance in New York and hold down her new internship at Fashion Weekly Magazine. Of course her biggest problem is her choice of men – namely Ultron – a robot with a strobe light for a penis.

It’s a happy ending though because she does find happiness with her Age of Ultron co-star, the Hulk. If you’ve seen the movie you’ll no doubt recognise the inspiration for the ending!

By the time we actually do get to see a female-centered superhero movie with Captain Marvel (supposedly in 2018) the total male-centered superhero films will be much higher than they are now. There will have been a total of 15 – 3 Captain America movies, 2 Guardians of the Galaxy movies, 1 Ant-Man movie, 1 Doctor Strange movie, 1 untitled Spider-Man movie, 3 Thor movies, 3 Avengers movies and 1 Black Panther movie.

Happy Star Wars Day!

By | Films

May the Fourth be with you! or Happy Stars Wars Day! A phrase that started as a pun, then a hashtag and then a full blown holiday celebration. Of course the phrase was inspired by the Jedi mantra “May the Force be with You”. Legend has it that the phrase was first used on May 4, 1979, the day Margaret Thatcher was elected as the UK’s prime minister. The Conservative party placed a half page advert in the London Evening News which read: “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.”

The phrase then really took off about 9 years ago when the social media world started to become a reality. Now there are events all over the world celebrating the day where fans dress up as Star Wars characters, eat Star Wars food, play Star Wars trivia and just generally get lost in the Star Wars world.

The June 2015 issue of Vanity Fair has practically dedicated the whole issue to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with wonderful new photos and trivia about December’s upcoming movie – they tweeted the issue yesterday, see below:

It’s not just May the 4th thats important to Star Wars fans it’s the whole month of May. The six live-action movies of the saga all debuted in May (beginning with the very first one on May 25, 1977). George Lucas has his birthday in May (he was born May 14, 1944) and this day has always traditionally been the starting date of the Star Wars weekends at Walt Disney World Resort.

Check out the highlights from this years Star Wars Celebration that took place April 16-19 in the Anaheim Convention Center in California. Next years celebration takes place in London, July 15-17 2016. (Tap here to watch in C5

Jennifer Lopez pays tribute to Selena

By | Featured, Films, Music

In what was undoubtedly the most poignant moment of the evening Jennifer Lopez paid an emotional tribute to Selena Quintanilla at the Billboard Latin Music Awards which took place last week and aired on Telemundo (April 30). Huge screens on the stage played a montage of images of Selena who was tragically murdered in 1995 at the tender age of 23. Selena’s former band Los Dinos joined JLo on stage. At the end of the stunning performance, in which she seamlessly changed costumes 3 times, the 45-year old star shouted “We love you Selena,” to a standing ovation.

It was in 1997 that JLo had her big break playing the late singer in the critically acclaimed biopic – the 10th highest-grossing biopic of all time – in which an incredible 22,000 actresses were screened for the part. JLo became the highest-paid Latina in Hollywood history, earning a million dollars for her role.

It was Selena who put Tejano music on the American map and she still continues to be a force in Latin pop 20 years after her death, with six posthumous releases reaching to No. 1 on the Latin Albums chart, the most recent in 2012.

Pedro Fernandez, who co-hosted the show described JlLo’s performance as “magical”. “She has had many more triumphs in her life,” Fernandez said. “But her magical interpretation of Selena on the big screen has made a definite mark on her artistic life.”

JLo spoke to Billboard before the performance about what Selena means to her: “I felt she had a sense to live in the moment, that you’re not promised tomorrow. For me that was the biggest lesson. That affected me in my life far more profoundly than the movie did in career terms.”

JLo performed her renditions of Como La Flor, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, Amor Prohibido, I Could Fall In Love, and her finale No Me Queda Mas.

See the supercars of SPECTRE in action

By | Featured, Films

There is nothing quite like a James Bond car chase and we can look forward to a spectacular chase sequence in the latest instalment of the spy thriller. Last week the city of Rome was treated to a car chase through the city streets with an Aston Martin DB10 and the Jaguar C-X75.

Neil Layton, the Action Vehicles Technical Coordinator for Spectre explained, “We have taken delivery now of 8 Aston Martins. These are bespoke, these have been specially built for this film.” It’s the 50th anniversary of Bond’s use of an Aston Martin which first started with Goldfinger when Sean Connery drove the iconic DB5 (pictured below). Aston Martin have stated that they are working closely with Director Sam Mendes in order to create “the ultimate car for the world’s most famous spy”.

The video below shows some fantastic behind-the-scenes footage of what we can expect when 007 (Daniel Craig) clashes with Mr Hinx (Dave Bautista). Stunt Coordinator, Gary Powell, commented, “We have the Aston Martin which is obviously a classic design, smooth, fast car and then we have Hinx who’s a beast of a character in a beast of a car which is the Jaguar C-X75.”

Director Sam Mendes says: “I love the idea of this fantastic car being in a one-on-one battle with another incredible car from Jaguar, which is similarly extraordinary actually. So it’s a cat-and-mouse game through the night time streets of Rome, at great speed, between two of the fastest cars in the world, neither of which you’ll have ever seen before.”

Producers have yet to reveal what gadgets the Aston Martin DB10 will be fitted with. The models exact specs are being kept under wraps as it is thought that the car is a “nod to future designs” and naturally Aston Martin want to keep the machine as far away as possible from the eyes of rival firms.

Information leaked from the production company points to the fact that unfortunately, one of the cars may end up in the Tiber, although this scene has not been shot yet.

Spectre hits cinemas on November 6, 2015.

Jurassic World – Official Global Trailer

By | Films | No Comments

Steven Spielberg returns to executive produce the long-awaited fourth instalment of his groundbreaking Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World. Set 22 years after the events in Spielberg’s 1993 film, Jurassic World begins with Dr. John Hammond’s life-long dream being realised – the Isla Nublar park is set up as a fully functioning dinosaur theme park. However, the novelty wears off and in order to boost ticket sales and pull in more cash they create a genetically modified hybrid called Indominus Rex. Of course, things go terribly, horribly wrong. Indominus Rex starts “killing for sport…”

Each Jurassic Park film has attempted to raise the stakes – the second one saw T-Rex rampaging on the mainland, the third saw Alan Grant leading two distraught parents on a mission to save their son lost in dino-infested territory. So how do you up the ante for this instalment? Easy. Indominus Rex.

Colin Trevorrow directs this epic action-adventure based on the novel Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. The Park is Open June 12 – 14 years after the franchise’s last title, Jurassic Park III.

Check out their very cool website, which functions as if the park is real.

Fantastic Four

By | Films | No Comments

We’ve hardly recovered from the excitement of last week’s trailer releases – Star Wars and Batman v. Superman – and now we have another adrenaline-pumping, action-packed trailer for the Fantastic Four – a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team. It offers way more information than the first trailer. We finally get to see the four take on their fantastic forms and we even get a sneak peek at the legendary nemesis Doctor Doom. We’re still not sure how it will all pan out, but we do get a lot more clues.

Directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle), the almost 3-minute trailer gives us a detailed look at how the four cope with their new superpowers after teleporting to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. They have to learn how to harness these powers and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

The classic Marvel Comic’s villain Doctor Doom is re-envisioned as an anti-social programmer who turns evil (doesn’t sound far fetched to us, seems to be plenty of those about these days). He is no longer referred to as Victor Von Doom, but Victor Domashev.

Fantastic Four stars Miles Teller as Mister Fantastic, Michael B Jordan as the Human Torch, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Jamie Bell as the Thing and Toby Keller as the ominous Doctor Doom.

If you’re interested to take a look inside the trailer you can watch the filmmaker commentary here.

Directed by Josh Trank, Fantastic Four hits cinemas on August 6 in the UK and August 7 in the US.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Trailer 1

By | Films | No Comments

It’s here! After months of build up we finally get to feast our eyes on the first full-length official trailer for Zack Synder’s highly anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The trailer was posted by Synder 3 days earlier than planned and 24 hours after a grainy bootleg copy leaked online. The very dark and moody 2-minute trailer looks at the role of Superman in human society after the destruction he caused battling General Zod in Man of Steel.

The beginning of the trailer has voice overs from newsman Charlie Rose and others who can be heard championing Superman as a hero, while Holly Hunter says: “Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” “The world has been so caught up with what he can do, that no-one has asked what he should do.” There are some very deep and cutting lines in the trailer – lines that are so deep they leave a scar, like this one from Jeremy Irons: “That’s how it starts. The fever, the rage, the powerlessness that turns good men… cruel.”

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman and Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane returning from Man of Steel, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and Holly Hunter in a role newly created for the film. Jason Momoa will also be making an appearance as Aquaman.

There’s so much to look forward to! Unfortunately though we have a long time to wait as the movie opens worldwide on March 25, 2016. Meanwhile, this trailer will surely fuel fan discussions for months!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Official Teaser Nº2

By | Films | No Comments

The new Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer Nº2 has been released and…it’s the real deal! Just hearing the soundtrack again in a new engineered audio gives us goosebumps. The trailer was released yesterday during the official fan convention – Star Wars Celebration – held in California. Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and director JJ Abrams were among the Star Wars royalty in attendance. Harrison Ford, who plays the space smuggler Hans Solo, was not at the event as he is still recovering after crashing his plane onto a golf course. Ford last appeared in a Star Wars film – Return of the Jedi – over 30 years ago in 1983.

This ‘teaser’ trailer (JJ Abrams is very insistent on calling it a ‘teaser’) is actually perfect and fan reaction has been overwhelmingly positive.  Abrams made it quite clear at the fan convention that there’s an awful lot riding on the reception of The Force Awakens and he is fully aware of the load on his shoulders. It’s the first film without the direct involvement of creator George Lucas, the first movie since Disney acquired Lucasfilm and the first movie in a decade.

At the fan convention we heard that Abrams is remaining true to the spirit of the Original Trilogy by using physical props and sets as much as is possible, rather than relying too heavily on CGI. Building as much as they can has been a mandate in the production. We also heard that there will be new droids (just the domes) including “R5” and “R6” and every pilot will have their own specific droid. The highlight for us was when they rolled out the very practical, and totally real BB8 onto the stage. He is incredibly cute and looks amazing. If you’re a true fan you should try tweeting the hashtags #stormtrooper #C3PO or #BB8, you’ll get special emojis.

bb8.0

The film takes place 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and introduces new characters played by John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Oscar Isaac alongside the return of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher. Episode VII in the Star Wars Saga, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, opens in cinemas December 18, 2015.

Marvel’s Ant-Man – Trailer 1

By | Films | No Comments

The first full trailer for Ant-Man has landed and it’s awesome! Full of microscopic action we see Paul Rudd play an adorable superhero armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength.

The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man.” Master thief Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Doctor Hank Pym (Michale Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Marvel’s latest project seems to have a sense of humor as well as a great storyline. There are plenty of laugh out loud one-liners and funny-man Paul Rudd steps into the suit with ease.

We can’t wait for July 17 when Ant-Man to scurries into theatres – Rolling Stone considers the film to be one of the 68 Reasons That This Year will Rule.
