Pentatonix – We are Ninjas

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Pentatonix, the coolest a capella group on the planet, have just released a very special video, inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. The movie is a remake of the hugely popular 80s TV show, which in turn was based on the original comic book.

In the run up to the release of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie Pentatonix teamed up with Paramount pictures to produce this very cool video which celebrates Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo. And Pizza.

The song is not very long, just over 1 minute 30 seconds, but in that time the group get through some complicated choreography, some great rapping and a very cool pizza appreciation moment. (You should probably order pizza before you watch the video.)

“The idea is we’re kind of riffing off the turtles,” said director Melissa Bolton-Klinger in a behind-the-scenes clip. “Dark alleyway scenes, kind of West Side Story meets ninjas.”

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie opened in the US on August 8, the UK has to wait till October 17.

Chelsea Lankes – Secret

By | Music Videos | No Comments

She’s only 25 years old and comes from Nashville, one of the cities with most musical tradition in the United States. Chelsea Lankes, singer-songwriter, is a newcomer to the world of music who aims for the top when it comes to the quality and depth of her lyrics, accompanied by a delicious and relatable voice.

Her latest release, titled “Secret” is a wonderful and upbeat song, which is part of the unveiling of her debut album, scheduled for release next autumn.

The videoclip for “Secret” is an intimate setting, with the young artist trying to capture the levels of complicity and connection that develops between two people in love, without having to say a word – just letting themselves enjoy the silence. The scenes portray happiness and tranquillity, going hand in hand with the singer’s words “we touch and no need for speaking”. Quoting Chelsea’s interview from the Times magazine website, she adds, “It was really fun creating a world where these two characters could interact. You can see these two people in this raw state of their relationship.”

While both her professional and personal life revolves around Los Angeles, Chelsea returned to her native Nashville to record this video. Her idea being to find inspiration and recreate a typical Southern motel, a setting that she’d envisioned for this story from the very beginning.

Her first major hit online was the song “Ghost”, released in late 2013, achieving fantastic reception on SoundCloud and YouTube. “Secret” is directed by the famous filmmaker Chuck David Willis, exquisitely combining scenes to go together with Chelsea Lankes’ delicate voice and the accompanying synthesizers and guitar. Although there is a light sense of sex floating in the air and we do catch glimpses of semi-naked bodies, the resulting video is far from being explicit – which has become very common in works of this genre.

Chelsea Lankes is one of the best-kept secrets in pop music and her catchy, upbeat song “Secret” invites us to dream and expect great things from this young artist.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Director Peter Jackson is back, teasing us with the launch of the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. After witnessing the little Bilbo Baggins face off with the mighty and fearsome dragon Smaug, as well as snatching the famous ring of power from the sinister, yet haunted Gollum, Bilbo still has to fight fiercely to get back home to his beloved and peaceful Shire.

New images of the third installment of The Hobbit were presented in the latest Comic-Con convention in San Diego, the world’s epicenter of all things sci-fi and fantasy.

“One day, I’ll remember. Remember everything that happened. The good, the bad. Those who survived – and those that did not.” The trailer begins with these sad words, marking the mood for the film that will conclude the second trilogy from the universe created by J.R.R. Tolkien and painted on film by Peter Jackson. Fans of the series can look forward to an even greater dose of battles and action than in the previous two installments.

Once again, we will be following our favorite main heroes – the adventurous little hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), the wise wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) and the mountain dwarves led by the fearless Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Thorin certainly created unbelievable tension when he openly declared his lust for battle, with his chilling response “I will have war” and later adding the key phrase that intrigues and leaves us all wanting more “Will you follow me, one last time?”

The teaser allowed us to catch a glimpse of the big showdown that will take place on the edge of Erebor, the Lonely Mountan. A grand battle with the dark forest elves, dwarves, humans and great Eagles of Esgaroth against the menacing goblins and orcs.

Frist there was The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), followed by the magnificent The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and on the 17th of December of this year, the trilogy inspired by the Lord of the Rings, shall come to an end with the release of The Battle of the Five Armies.

L’Agent by Agent Provocateur

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Written, directed by and starring Penelope CruzL’Agent by Agent Provocateur – AW14 2014 Campaign Video. This should spice up your Friday! Definitely NSFW!

This could be Agent Provocateur’s raciest video yet. Penelope Cruz drives a Cadillac full of models into the desert. The women pile out of the car, strip off – revealing the wonderful lingerie collection – and start doing their sexy dance…A young man (played by top model Jon Kortajarena), lost in the desert and desperate for water spies the group of women from afar and can’t believe what he is seeing. It’s a mirage of course – poor guy! But no more spoilers, watch the video and see for yourself how good it is! Agent Provocateur tag the video with this description: “The lost explorer’s sparkling mirage of everything he’d ever dreamt of – and more.”

The collection is wonderful – featuring bright, bold colours and prints from neon orange to peacock green. The choreography is by celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson and music from OPTIMIST by Eduardo Cruz.

In an interview in the Daily Mail Penelope Cruz said:”Monica and I are really happy with our Autumn Winter 2014 collection, it’s really vibrant. So I felt it was really important to create a very sensual film that could also tell a little story, like the first one I did. I got the idea for the film while I was listening to the track from Optimist, “Single Dutch”, by Eduardo Cruz. His music always inspires me so much. Collaborating with Tracy on the choreography was the perfect fit and brought a great dynamic to the set.”

Into the Storm

By | Music Videos | No Comments

In theatres this weekend is the insane disaster film Into the Storm. This is ‘Twister’ on steroids. The special effects are flawless – you’ll be on the edge of your seat.

The action takes place in a fictional town in the Midwest and we see the storm through the eyes of a group of storm chasers.

Without looking at details like the plot and the characters this film delivers some pretty scary visuals for our climate change era. If you want to see insanely large tornadoes and devastation on a massive scale the film delivers. The Forbes review put it very succinctly “Into the Storm gives you plenty of rock-solid disaster porn.”

The character and narrative have been torn apart by most reviewers as a kind of mush that just doesn’t work. But honestly, who cares about details of the plot when all you want to see is the big show? Special effects have come a long way since the release of ‘Twister’ 18 years ago and disaster-junkies will leave the theatre on a high. Even those who are not that into the disaster thrill cannot fail to be affected by the awesomeness of the storm.

Everyone on screen is busy filming everyone else – this is a “found footage” movie – which sometimes gets a bit extreme. Disaster strikes under the watchful lens of someone’s mobile phone which is in the process of shooting someone else shooting someone else.

Directed by Steven Quale, an experienced disaster movie maker – Titanic and Avatar – this is technically an incredible achievement. Its authentic and delivers some really frightening moments, without dragging along – it clocks in at just under 90 minutes.

No one goes to a movie like this for the elegant dialogue and fine acting – it’s a roller coaster ride! Hold on!

Meghan Trainor – All About That Bass

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Have a problem with your body image? Meghan Trainor’s debut single “All About That Bass” should help. Tons of airplay and a general buzz about the track have sent it straight to the top of the iTunes charts and to Nº8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The pastel-pink, adorable video stars Meghan and a sassy troupe of dancers who have no problem flaunting “all the right junk in all the right places.” Also featuring in this clip is Vine superstar Sione Maraschino – watch the video and you’ll see that he can shake his booty just as well as the ladies!

Meghan Trainor is a singer-songwriter from Nashville and this debut single is bringing her into the realm of pop star. The positive message behind the song is so needed these days: It doesn’t matter what your body type is, as long as you know how to work what you’ve got. “I’m here to tell you that every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top!”. The song is very retro, R&B with a Motown blend.

Meghan, in a interview with Billboard magazine, said that she wrote the song for herself: “I wrote it for me, as well, because I’ve struggled with [body image] since I was very young. And, my best friend is a beautiful goddess, but she’ll pick on herself in the mirror. “My forehead’s too big,” or, “My shoulders go out too far …” So, if other girls can relate to the song, it makes me feel even better. It’s unreal that I’m kind of helping people.”

“I saw a feature on The Ellen DeGeneres Show about that model who was Photoshopped to have extra-long arms. I was like, this is getting out of control. Someone needs to say something! So, when I got my record deal, and with this song, I was like, perfect, I have the opportunity to say something to the world. I’ll take it. This is the best message I could say.”

All About That Bass debuts at No. 13 on Streaming Songs with 4.2 million plays (up 141 percent) and posts the biggest jump of the week on the radio-based Pop Songs chart (37-23, up 77% in plays). Meghan has seen a 68 percent rise in new Twitter followers last week alone and a 433% gain in Twitter mentions! She’s hot!

Meghan has been writing songs since she was 11 years old. She released her debut album in 2011 – “I’ll Sing With You”, but it wasn’t till this year that she found fame. L.A. Reid heard Trainor’s demo of “All About That Bass” and immediately signed her to Epic Records.

The Expendables 3

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Get ready for the last ride! The Expendables 3 hits theatres this month and although most critics have torn it apart calling it a ‘geri-action’ adventure with a threadbare plot, if it’s action you want – you’ve got it!

The reviews haven’t been great – Rotten Tomatoes have given it a miserable 33% and IMDB slightly better at 6.4 out of 10.

Digital Spy: “If it wasn’t for a nostalgic affection for the cast and their previous endeavours, The Expendables 3 would be borderline unreleasable. The big name involvement ensures that the movie is watchable, but the underdeveloped script and unconvincing direction do them a great disservice.”

Hollywood Reporter: “With no higher purpose than generating cash and allowing for a few shared laughs among old buddies on repetitive assignments to take out tyrannical despots and nefarious arms dealers, the Expendables lack the dimensionality of enduring screen characters, despite the iconic roles many of these actors have played in other films.”

Whatever the reviews say, as Stallone says “Let’s do what we do”. This movie is mindless entertainment – and that is said with the greatest respect, because mindless entertainment is great fun! The action starts really early and never stops, the explosions are awesome and it has everything a good action movie should have.

Actually, it’s closer to a show that a movie – it feels like the lads are back together for one last run, to show us that they’ve still got it. And they’ve still got it! They might be geriatric, as many are saying, but there are teenagers who don’t look as good as this bunch.

There is also talk of a spin off – The Expendabelles – which is due to start shooting early next year. Speaking at the premiere in central London on Monday producer Avi Lerner explained: “We are writing the final lines of the script, we’ve got lots of ideas about who is going to be in it. We’re going to do it at the beginning of next year, that’s all I can say about this movie right now.”

The Expendables 3 hits theatres in the US on August 15.

The Script – Superheroes

By | Music Videos | No Comments

The Script honor everyday Superheroes in their new music video shot in Alexandra, Johannesburg. A Heartwarming song with an equally inspiring video.

Superheroes is the first single from their upcoming album No Sound Without Silence. Directed by Vaughan Arnell, the video celebrates the everyday heroes of the city and in particular a father on his workday.

The lyrics are beautiful: “When you’ve been fighting for it all your life / You’ve been struggling to make things right / That’s how a superhero learns to fly / Every day, every hour Turn the pain into power.”

Superheroes is a song full of hope and was one of the first tracks to be written for the new album – inspired by the highs the band experienced as they came off stage at the end of one of their sold out stadium shows in the US.

No Sound Without Silence, the bands fourth studio album, is actually the sound of the Script firing on all cylinders. It was written whilst the band were touring in 2013 – they used a specially built mobile recording studio. The tour lasted 11 months and they played to sold out audiences in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia – including two special shows at the O2 in London. As soon as thy finished touring they took a couple of weeks off and then hit the studios again in London and Dublin to finish the work.

The Script have achieved a huge amount of success globally, selling more than 20 million records – all three of their albums have gone multi-platinum worldwide. They have done particularly well in the US where they have sold over one million albums and have 5 platinum singles.

No Sound Without Silence is a phrase derived from an idea put forward by the band, lead vocalist Danny O’Donoghue said “The time we’ve been away touring, we’ve had time to contemplate about what we want to say to the (music) industry. There is no sound without silence. You can’t have anything good to say if you don’t think about it first”.

No Sound Without Silence will be released on September 12 in Ireland and September 15 in the UK by Columbia Records.

Ed Sheeran – Don’t

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Ed Sheeran has released a new video for Don’t which features a seriously flexible dancer who pop locks his way from rags to riches in Los Angeles.

Following Ed’s video for ‘Sing’ he only makes two small cameo appearances in this video. The dancer wakes up in the ghetto and slowly makes his way into better and better homes, changing his clothes as he goes. He finally ends up in a beautiful LA mansion, gets suited and booted and then shows off some serious matrix-like dance moves.

The song might be inspired by a break-up but the music video, directed by Emil Nava, is quite inspirational. In an article by Rolling Stone Ed explains that the song is about a real-life romance with another singer who slept with one of Sheeran’s close friends while they were staying in the same hotel. And it definitely was not about Taylor Swift, contrary to internet rumours. “It’s 100 percent not about Taylor,” he said. “Taylor’s one of these people that if you piss her off and she writes a song about you, it’s not good news for you. I’ve never dated Taylor. I’ve dated a few singers, though.”

Don’t is the second single from Ed’s hugely popular second album X which has now been at Nº1 on the UK charts for six weeks – it’s the biggest selling album of the year in the UK.

The ‘Don’t’ EP is slated for release on August 24, and it includes a Rick Ross remix of the track as well as ‘Be My Husband (live at Glastonbury)’ plus ‘Everything You Are’.

Lana Del Rey – Ultraviolence

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Lana Del Rey takes on the role of a bride in her ethereal Ultraviolence video. Only problem is, where is the groom?

In line with Lana’s recent videos, this video is set in early 60’s Americana and the footage is grainy with washed out colours, which certainly gives it the ‘home video’ vibe. In fact, the whole video was shot on an iPhone. It’s a very dreamy visual and goes so well with the music.

The whole video sees Lana in a low-cut wedding dress walking slowly through a forest (was she inspired by the Kardashian-West wedding?) en route to an altar. And even though no one is there when Lana finally arrives, the video still manages to be hopelessly romantic – despite lyrics like “He hit me and it felt like a kiss.”

Lana explained her reasons for singing lines like this in her Rolling Stone cover story. “I’m very selfish. I make everything for me, kind of. I mean, every little thing, down to the guitar and the drums. It’s just for me…”

Lana is the only person to feature in the video though you do see a man’s hand – possibly the Director’s, Francesco Carrozzini.

Ultraviolence is the title track from Lana’s third studio album, released on June 13, 2014 by Interscope and Polydor Records. The album debuted at Nº1 in twelve countries and saw first-week sales of 880,000 copies. Sales now exceed one million worldwide.

Zhu – Faded

By | Music Videos | No Comments

The mysterious LA-based producer & vocalist Zhu now has his first UK Top 10 – new in a Nº3 this week – with ‘Faded’. The black-and-white, arty music video is a racy romp through the Paris club scene, filmed in the Montemarte districts’ subterranean Social Club.

This is Zhu’s first music video and the world still doesn’t seem to know who he really is. He doesn’t appear in the video (although we’re not sure of this either) but the video does take the viewer on a rather dreamy journey. It seems that being a mystery producer is very ‘de moda’ these days. Everyone’s doing it. Look at Daft Punk or Deadmau5 with his huge mouse head hiding his identity or Jai Paul and Burial who won’t even play live.

Last year Zhu had a twitter, Facebook and last.fm page and then they all mysteriously disappeared, being replaced by new accounts that are empty. I guess ‘Watch this Space’ is the only advice!

Zhu released an EP ‘Nightway’ in April this year, he is now zooming up the charts and we still have no portraits, no live performances, just his distinctive logo and a music video for Faded. The website zhumusic.com doesn’t give anything away either – there is just a soundcloud player and an email sign up.

Apparently his name is Steven Zhu and in his one sole interview with Triple J he mentioned he might be visiting Australia for a live show. “We’ll be over there, I can’t say when, but we will be over there this year at some point,” he said. “I’m very excited; it’s kind of another home (away) from home because you guys were the first to embrace it.”

He also said in the interview that this might be his last interview as he does prefer to keep a low profile, both on and off the stage. When asked whether he would reveal himself during the show, he had this to say: “Whether it’s anonymous or not anonymous, we’re going to definitely bring a great experience,” he said. “Whatever complements the music, you know people definitely see fog in this music and see smoke. We’ll definitely be aware to make sure every sense is getting touched during the show.”

Sam Smith – I’m Not The Only One

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Sam Smith is currently one of the hit voices in British pop music. His latest release is titled “I’m Not The Only One”, and belongs to his acclaimed debut album ‘In The Lonely Hour’ (2014). The video clip is signed by director Luke Monaghan, once again pairing up to repeat the success of the last hit “Leave Your Lover”, filled with stunning photography and delicious cinematic elegance.

The London singer has had the great help of the actress Dianna Agron, known worldwide for her role as Quinn Fabray in the series Glee, broadcasted by Fox.

The fourth single from Sam Smith’s first album revolves around infidelity. In it, we see a perfect wife saying goodbye to her husband at the door of their home, in an alleged atmosphere of happiness and love. While the husband runs to the arms of a lover in the city center, the wife, knowing the adventures her loved one, is evidently frustrated and resigned. Everything seems to be heading towards disaster as we listen to the lovely voice of Sam Smith, but at the end of the video nothing is what it seems…

The tone of the picture is framed in classic, elegant and timeless environment to which we are accustomed from this singer, highly consistent with the letter and the tone of the song.

Sam Smith, songwriter as well as singer, gained much of his popularity through various collaborations with artists such as Disclosure and Naughty Boy. Winner of the Critics prize in recent Brit Awards and prize-holder of the BBC’s Sound of 2014 award, Smith keeps presenting singles from his debut album, which has reached number one in the UK charts and number two in U.S. Moreover, “In The Lonely Hour”, released last May, in its first week sales overtook “Ghost Stories” by the exemplary group, Coldplay.

Mad Max: Fury Road

By | Music Videos | No Comments

“Only the mad survive.” This is the motto of the new installment of the legendary post-apocalyptic franchise “Mad Max” starring Mel Gibson, which busted the box office during the eighties and became a legend of action cinema.

Mad Max: Fury Road is a new look at a world consumed by violence and barbarism in a setting dominated by desert, barren lands, cars, fire and the struggle to find gasoline. The head of this new adventure, for the constantly tormented Mad Rockatansky, is the director of the original trilogy – George Miller.

The official trailer for the film premiered last week at Comic-Con in San Diego (USA), a presentation that has become imperative with major world premieres relating to science fiction and film adventures.

Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) will be responsible for updating the franchise for the fourth time and bringing back to life the tormented avenger of the road. Sharing the spotlight with Oscar winner Charlize Theron (Monster, Prometheus). The beautiful Australian actress, almost unrecognizable in this film, plays the other major role of Empress Furious. The cast is also made up of other familiar names such as Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Hugh Keays-Byrne (Mad Max), Nathan Jones (Conan the Barbarian), Zoe Kravitz (Divergent), as well as supermodel and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Dark of the Moon).

The Oscar winner George Miller, yet again raises his own film franchise that began in 1979 with “Mad Max”, a film with a budget that was less than 300,000 euros, which then grossed a whopping 74 million worldwide. Soon after came “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” (1981) and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985), where we could see the singer Tina Turner in the role of a ruthless villain.

Mad Max: Fury Road, shot almost entirely in the deserts of Namibia, where events will take place before the original trilogy storyline, with hopes of becoming an icon of post-apocalyptic cinema as were its predecessors. Its worldwide release is scheduled for May 22, 2015, although the producer is considering an earlier launch date of May 15 for some European countries.

Janelle Monae – Electric Lady

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Janelle Monáe has just released a new music video for Electric Lady. The futuristic clip features a host of stars, soulful horns and plenty of groovy dancing!

The song is a great showcase of Janelle’s talents – she even demonstrates her rapping skills. Janelle took the opportunity to celebrate the important women in her life – her ‘Electric Ladies’ and the video features cameos from T.I., Estelle, Esperanza Spalding, T-Boz, Monica, Kimbra, Joi, choreographer Fatima Robinson and Monáe’s mother.

The video is set at a futuristic college party where Monáe hits up an “Electra Phi Beta” sorority house party and from there the whole party erupts into fantastic dance routines – including light sabres and marching bands.

The press release included two quotes from President Barak Obama and the First Lady:

First Lady Michelle Obama on Janelle Monáe:
“First of all, I am honored to be the first Electric Lady. I got my letter in the mail — I framed it; it’s up. I love that she is one of the young artists here who is making music that means something. She has a message. She has a voice. She has a power in her. And she understands the responsibility she has within her grasp to take these opportunities and just take off with them. She serves as a role model and an inspiration to so many young people. And I am happy to call her my friend. I am so proud of her.”

President Barack Obama on Janelle Monáe:
“Janelle has performed at the White House, like, 15 times. There’s going to be an official Janelle Monae room in the White House. We love her. Michelle and I love Janelle. We love her energy. We love her talent. But we most of all love her character. And anybody who gets a chance to talk to her, this is just a remarkable, strong, smart young lady. And I have to say nice things about her because she may be the only person in possession of a video in which I try to keep up with her and Usher on the dance floor. Now, this is top secret. She has promised that this will never be released. But she can blackmail me at any time.”

Guardians of the Galaxy

By | Music Videos | No Comments

In theatres this weekend the smart, tongue-in-cheek space opera ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. A bunch of unlikey superheroes are on a quest to save the cosmos in Marvel’s latest cinematic adventure.

The film is written and directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Dave Bautista (Drax), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Vin Diesel (Groot) and Bradley Cooper (Rocket).

Marvel has brought us the blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, and now comes a brand new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded into the cosmos! Chris Pratt leads the unlikely heroes – Rocket, an aggressive gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly Gamora and Drax the Destroyer. “If we are going to save the galaxy, we’re gonna have to do it together.”

As is now expected from Marvel Studios the inclusion of special post-credit sequences at the end of the movie are worth waiting for. We don’t want to spoil things if you haven’t seen the movie, so suffice to say, remember to stay for the credits, you won’t be disappointed. It’s one of the best post-credit sequences, ever.

We love the soundtrack – it’s quite retro, suggesting that the Studio are expecting ‘middle’ youth, not just teenagers to enjoy this epic adventure.

The best character in our opinion is Groot, played by our favourite actor Vin Diesel – “I didn’t realise how much I love trees” – Vin said of his role.

The movie website IMDB have given the movie a 9/10 rating and Rotten Tomatoes have given it a whopping 90%.

Initial Release: August 1, 2014 (USA)
Running Time: 122 minutes

Katy Perry – This Is How We Do

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Katy Perry debuts a wacky pop art video for her new single #thisishowwedo. It’s a wonderful explosion of art, vintage fashion, pepperoni pizzas and even twerking ice creams! Some serious eye candy here!

After problems with her last video ‘Dark Horse’ which caused a lot of controversy, Katy has wisely steered away from presenting any ethnic groups, instead she has opted for pop culture references, with her Pee-Wee Herman-inspired backup dancers and vintage art-inspired outfits. We love the tribute to Aretha Franklin’s inauguration hat!

The video begins with Katy as an art masterpiece – she then circles through 5 stunning looks in just 30 seconds! She wears everything from Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic Mondrian dress to a pepperoni pizza swimsuit! Her back up dancers look pretty amazing as well – especially the super cute guys dressed in smooth grey suits and red bow ties.

Don’t worry about some of the lyrics – which are a teeny bit cringe-worthy “Now we’re talking astrology / getting our nails did all Japanese-y,” just enjoy the show! The combination of visuals and beats works really well – Katy rocks it in this video!

‘This Is How We Do’ is the fifth single from Perry’s recent chart-topping album Prism.

Bakermat – One Day (Vandaag)

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Dutch producer Lodewijk Fluttert, known by his stage name Bakermat, is on course for his first UK Top 40 hit with One Day. The track was a huge hit across Europe last year and is now breaking out of house music circles and entering the big leagues! The song samples Martin Luther King’s most famous speech “I Have a Dream”.

The song was originally released as ‘Vandaag’ in August 2012 as a single and reached the top 10 in Austria, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. It was then rereleased by Sony this year as ‘One Day (Vandaag)’ and immediately became a hit in Germany and Austria and now – it’s edging up the UK charts, currently sitting at Nº12.

Bakermats masterful use of the saxophone melody, overlaid with samples of the speech gives the track an almost ethereal feel. We interviewed Bakermat in November last year and spoke to him about the use of this famous speech: “I think it’s the best speech ever written and narrated. The speech is music itself. I thought it would be nice to ‘remix’ it and so, I started the track “Vandaag” from scratch, with only the speech to draw inspiration from. I made the chords and built stuff up around it. Martin Luther King remains one of the best speechmakers ever.”

Read the full interview here.

Upcoming Bakermat concerts:

Saturday 06 September 2014 – O2 Academy Brixton, London, UK

Saturday 20 September 2014 – L’Olympia, Paris, France

Zumbao – Taboo

By | Music Videos | No Comments

American-Mexican rapper Taboo, best known as a member of The Black Eyed Peas, released a rhythmic solo single entitled ‘Zumbao’.

The song was released just before the start of the 2014 football World Cup Brazil, and has now become one of the most played hits in Latin America.

The track was composed by the Ecuadorian singer-songwriter and winner of a Latin Grammy, Paulina Aguirre. Taboo pays homage to his Latin roots in ‘Zumbao’, where he mentions South American pop stars like El Chavo del Ocho, Juan Gabriel and Marco Antonio Solis. In his own words it’s a way of describing, through music, his childhood as a Latin growing up in California.

Jaime Luis Gómez, or Taboo, became tremendously popular in the 90s and early 2000s as part of The Black Eyed Peas. Today, his fame hasn’t waned and is among the 10 top-paid rappers in 2014, according to the ‘People with Money’ magazine – his profits are around $46 million. With the launch of this latest solo single, he’s cemented himself at the same level as the other members of the band, such as Fergie, Will.i.am and Apl.de.ap, who already have several works and collaborations on the market.

Having just turned 39 and father of 3 kids, Taboo stated that ‘Zumbao’ helped him get his feet back on the ground and escape a life led by drugs and alcohol. Some of the habits were destroying his personal and professional lives, and are covered in his biography, ‘Fallin’ Up: My Story’.

After collaborating with artists such as Sie7e, Mexican star Paulina Rubio in his hit ‘Hoy Me Toca a MI’, and the recent ‘Taboo Experience’ tour, in which the rapper toured the world’s best clubs, Taboo returns with ‘Zumbao’ while still shaping ‘Tabmagnetic’, which will presumably be his first full-length work.

Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga
– Anything Goes

By | Music Videos | No Comments

It’s Jazz time baby! Lady Gaga reveals her incredible voice in this first single from her joint album with Tony Bennett, ‘Cheek to Cheek’. “No autotune. No tricks. Pure jazz,” Lady Gaga tweeted.

Most people are unaware of the fact that Lady Gaga has been performing jazz numbers since age 13. Tony Bennett said: “I don’t understand why she had to make contemporary music! When she sings great standards, she does it with such emotion… It will surprise people by the quality of her voice when making quality songs. We sing a duet again on the album, but also separately. With this album, I think she will become bigger than Elvis Presley! Of course we recorded the album in New York. As the saying goes: ‘If you can make it in New York, you’ll make it anywhere.”

Gaga commented on the collaboration “Cheek To Cheek came out of a very organic friendship and relationship that Tony and I have built over the years and it truly was a collaborative effort. It was important to Tony that this was a jazz record. I’ve been singing jazz since I was a child and really wanted to show the authentic side of the genre. We made an album of jazz classics, but it has a modern twist.”

“I love everything about working with Tony – he’s such a legend, and because of that I get to learn so much when we sing together. We met 3 or 4 years years ago and started recording Cheek to Cheek a couple of years ago.”

The unusual pair first collaborated in 2011 with “The Lady Is a Tramp” for Tony Bennett’s Grammy Award-winning album Duets II. They have performed together many times this year including an appearance at the Montreal Jazz Festival.

Cheek to Cheek features jazz musicians that are associated with both artists, including Gray Sargent, Mike Renzi, Harold Jones and Marshall Wood. Jazz soloists include tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano and flautist Paul Horn, who passed away earlier this month, according to a press release. The album features such standards as “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” “Lush Life,” “Sophisticated Lady,” and more.

Appearing yesterday (July 29) on the ‘Today Show’ they announced that the album will finally be released on September 23 – although the single ‘Anything Goes’ is now available on iTunes.

Jessie J, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj – Bang Bang

The long-awaited collaboration between the powerhouse trio Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj is finally here!

This dance anthem is everything fans had hoped for, and more. It’s upbeat, fun and is full of powerhouse vocals, big bouncy beats and horn blasts. It was produced by Max Martin, Savan Kotecha and Ilya, the same team that worked on Ariana Grande’s recent chart topper, ‘Problem’.

The song basically explains why they are better than the other ladies out there…(does anyone need convincing?) “She mighta let you hold her hand in school, but I’mma show you how to graduate,” Ariana belts outs. Later Minaj raps “Queen Nicki dominant / Prominent / It’s me, Jessie, and Ari / If they test me they sorry.” We love one of Jessie’s line: “She got a body like an hour glass but I can give it to you all the time!”

While Ariana and Nicki are both Queens of Pop in the US, Jessie J has not yet reached their dazzling heights.  However, ‘Bang Bang’ has enough star power and radio-playability to make a real impression for her stateside.

‘Bang Bang’ was released today (July 29) through Republic Records, the label that houses all three artists, and serves as a joint single. It is the lead single from Jessie’s upcoming third solo album and will also feature on the deluxe version of Ariana’s ‘My Everything’, slated for release on August 25.

Jessie J opened up about her new album today whilst chatting to Capital FM about ‘Bang Bang’: “This is the album to make a change, I feel like that’s what this album is about for me. I’ve learnt a lot, I’ve had my ups and my downs and I feel like the third album is always the one where you feel like your feet are found,” Jessie explained. “I feel like I really know what I stand for now, and what makes me, me!”

Lily Allen – As Long As I Got You

Lily Allen pays tribute to her husband in this colourful, feel-good video for ‘As Long As I Got You’, shot this year at the mother of all music festivals, Glastonbury.

The Chris Sweeney-directed video clip features fans and her performance at Glastonbury 2014. This isn’t a high budget music video, this is Lily having fun! It’s the first time she has played Glastonbury for 5 years and she starts off the video by sharing some family photos of herself and her dad in the mid-80s and talks about how they used to go to Glastonbury every year.

Lily said: “Glastonbury has always been a huge part of my life, and I wanted to make this video there to celebrate the spirit of the festival and also to show how my life has changed since the last time I played there. From being there as a child with my Dad, to my wilder days in the 2000s, to this year when I was back on the Pyramid stage, and taking my husband and own daughters along!”

Lily met her husband at Glastonbury back in 2009 and this lyrical ode to their love together is wonderful. “I had that awful feeling / That I needed help / My life had lost its meaning / But you saved me from myself.”

‘As Long As I Got You’ has been lifted from her latest chart-topping album Sheezus, released in May 2014, following ‘Hard Out Here’, ‘Air Balloon’, ‘Sheezus’, ‘Our Time’ and ‘URL Badman’. The album debuted at Nº1 on the UK Albums Chart, becoming her 2nd consecutive number-one album. Across the water on the Billboard charts it debuted at No. 12 selling 17,000 copies in its opening week.
