Ty Dolla $ign – Drop That Kitty
ft. Charli XCX & Tinashe

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Grab your kitty and report to the dance floor! Fresh off their performance of Drop That Kitty at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, Ty Dolla $ign, Charli XCX & Tinashe will teach you exactly how to Drop That Kitty in their new music video. The track must surely be an ode to cat lovers – get down with the cats in the club!

The fun clip sees the three artists cruising around the streets of LA, you’ll notice that DJ Mustard and Wiz Khalifa both make cameo appearances. Apparently though it wasn’t all fun and games. “I nearly crashed a chopper bike and died,” Charli told MTV News. “And also that’s such a stupid thing to do because everyone can ride a bike apart from me. They had to put a tricycle, like what kids use — stabilizers — I had to have stabilizers on my chopper, which was not cool at all.”

Charli XCX said that the dance-heavy video was inspired by Snoop Dogg’s Gin and Juice, and is all about a “dude hanging out with his homeys”. Any video that includes such great dancing, a catchy hook (be warned you’ll be Dropping your Kitty all day), kitties riding bikes, dancing cat heads and smoking blunts gets our #FreakyFriday vote.

The Cashmere Cat-produced track is from Ty Dolla $ign’s upcoming debut album Free TC which includes collaborations from Khalifa, Kendrick Lamar, Jagged Edge, YG, and R. Kelly.

Drop that kitty down low. Pop that kitty down low.

Ella Eyre – Together

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Hello, summer anthem! Ella Eyre has just released a video for her soulful, drum-and-bass-infused track Together. Forget the 9 to 5 and head off to Barcelona in a VW with Ella! 🙂

Vevo posted the track 2 days ago and called it “The Sound of the summer – We’ve made Ella’s new tune our TRACK OF THE WEEK! :-)” Could this be Ella’s first Nº1? Smells like it to us. We love ourselves some Ella – what a voice!

The 21-year-old Brit has already scored two Top 20 singles as a solo artist with If I Go (Nº 16) and Comeback (Nº12), as well as a Nº1 with Rudimental, Waiting All Night, and a Top 5 hit with DJ Fresh on Gravity.

The video was shot by Craig Moore in and around Barcelona, and was produced by Futurecut (Rihanna, Lily Allen). Together is officially out on May 18 and is lifted from Eyre’s debut album Feline, which is expected to be released later this summer.

Blondie – Call me

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

#ThrowbackThursday – We go back 35 years to 1980 when Blondie started a 6-week run on the Billboard Hot 100 charts with Call Me, also a Nº1 in the UK and a Top 10 hit in 15 other countries. The song features on the soundtrack of the Richard Gere movie American Gigolo – it plays over the opening titles where Gere is driving his car down the pacific coast highway in California.

Debbie Harry stated that the song is about driving, and that “When I was writing it, I pictured the opening scene, driving on the coast of California.” European disco legend Giorgio Moroder produced the track. The bridge of the original English-language version also includes Harry singing “Call me, my darling” in Italian (“Amore, chiamami”) and in French (“Appelle-moi, mon chéri”).

Not only was the track Nº1 on the Hot 100 for 6 weeks, it was certified Gold and spent 4 weeks at Nº2 on the US dance chart. It was Nº1 on Billboard Magazine’s 1980 year-end chart and lists as Nº 44 on Billboard’s All Time Top 100. 25 years after its original release, Call Me was ranked at No. 283 on the list of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

J.Y. Park – Who’s your mama? feat. Jessi

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

This is the perfect video for #WackyWednesday ! The song is damn catchy and the video will crack you up- it’s hilarious! The song has swept the music charts across South Korea, replacing girl group Miss A’s Only You and is getting more than a million YouTube hits a day. Rapper Jessi of ‘Lucky J’ is also featured in the single and video.

J.Y. Park basically worships the booty against a background of a funky beat. He has the audacity to ask girls in the gym what waist and hip measurements they have! Try that in Europe or America and you’d get your face slapped pretty quick! Overall, YouTube comments seems very positive – “i usually dislike this kind of songs and mvs (girls, butts, boobs) but surprisingly, jyp pulls it off perfectly” and another “Omg, Korean Iggy in the house! This song is catchy and the vid cracked me up!”

J. Y Park, otherwise known as Park Jin-young is a South Korean music mogul – a rapper, singer, producer and CEO of JYP Entertainment. He is also one of the three judges on the show K-Pop Star 4 (South Korea’s version of The Voice). Park made an official comeback with his new album 24/34 in the final episode of Season 4 on Sunday (April 12).

Park has released 7 albums and also composed and produced over 31 charting singles and 25 albums for various groups in South Korea including Rain and Wonder Girls. Park also became the first Asian producer to successfully cross over to the US, producing music for Will Smith, Mase and Cassie.

Janelle Monáe, Jidenna – Yoga

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Janelle Monáe has released a music video for her collaborative track Yoga with singer and label mate Jidenna. We love the tongue in cheek, breezy verse “She did that yoga / Looking for my loafers man, I woke up in a toga,”. The club comes to the yoga studio in this fun video.

This electro-soul track is quite seductive, supported by metallic handclaps and a stuttering beat. It’s the first new single from Monáe since her second album Electric Lady (2013). It will be featured on the upcoming label compilation EP Wondaland Presents: The Eephus which is due to drop this summer. The 5-track EP will feature songs from other acts on the label including St. Beauty, Deep Cotton and Roman GianArthur.

“Baby, bend over / Let your booty do that yoga,”. Sounds like Nirvana to us!

Tyler, The Creator – Fucking Young

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

The Odd Future rapper has shared a video from two songs off his upcoming album Cherry Bomb which will be released this coming Monday (April 13). Tyler directed the video himself under his Wolf Haley moniker and it’s pretty impressive. Fucking Young, as well as being funny and silly, is a colourful and creative affair with some great photography. The six-and-a-half-minute long narrative tells the story of the breakdown of a relationship between Tyler and a girl who is far too young for him.

The new album Cherry Bomb features collaborations with Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Charlie Wilson, Chaz Bundick (aka Toro y Moi) and the Black Lips’ Cole Alexander. In a string of recent tweets Tyler has stated that he wants the album to go to Nº1. “TELL EVERYONE. IT DOESNT MATTER MUCH BUT I DO WANT A NUMBER 1 ALBUM JUST TO GO BACK TO THE N****S WHO SAID I WOULDNT,” he wrote on April 9. His last album Wolf (2013) peaked at Nº3 on the Billboard album charts and Nº 17 on the UK charts.

Tyler is currently on a US tour taking in dozens of cities in North America, as well as 2 performances at the Coachella music festival, the House of Bllues in New Orleans and Irving Plaza in New York. The European leg of his tour kicks off in the UK on May 12 in Scotland. Visit Tyler’s website for more information.

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

The hottest song of the moment – the one that’s impossible to listen to without a smile on your face – has just got a brand new music video ahead of its official UK release on Simon Cowell’s Syco label. Jamaica-born OMI has already hit Nº 1 in 10 countries with the feel-good, reggae-infused track, and last week entered the UK Top 40 at Nº 37 on streams alone.

Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) is already among the top 10 most-streamed tracks globally, breaking the all-time streaming record in France with 1.3 million streams in a single week! The song has gained more than 100 million total Spotify streams, has reached Nº1 on Spotify in nine markets, and has seen combined YouTube views of more than 40 million. The track was also named one of ’16 Tracks You Need in Your Life Right Now’ by THE FADER.

OMI comes from the rural Jamaican parish of Clarendon. He met his music mentor and producer – Clifton ‘Specialist’ Dillon – in 2009 and set up his own music studio in Kingston.

Madonna – Ghosttown

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Madonna has released a stunning music video for her latest single Ghosttown. Jonas Akerlund, has once again, directed a Madonna masterpiece. The cinematic visual sees Madonna in a post-apocalyptic world surrounded by scenes of devastation and destruction. She eventually meets up with another survivor, Empire’s Terence Howard, better known as Lucius Lyon. They fall in love and although they don’t quite “wander off into the sunset”, it’s the post-apocalyptic equivalent.

Ghosttown is the second single from Madonna’s Rebel Heart album which was released last month and was stopped from hitting Nº1 on the Billboard album charts by, yep, you guessed it… the soundtrack to the first season of Empire!

We’re glad to see that despite her recent stage mishap Madonna is still wearing her beloved capes. We love her look in this video, very Stevie Nicks.

Last December hackers leaked unfinished songs from Rebel Heart – an act that Madonna called ‘artistic rape’ on Instagram. Due to this theft Madonna has taken a multi-platform approach to releasing this video and promoting her album. She used Snapchat, Instagram and Grindr for promotion and premiered the Ghosttown video on the broadcasting app Meerkat. A behind-the-scenes companion to the Ghosttown music video is available on Tidal.

Tinashe – All Hands On Deck

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Tinashe shows off some serious high energy dance moves in the new video for her stellar track All Hands On Deck. Directed by Ben More the video was shot with a handful of backing dancers in a shipping yard. The photography is excellent, the setting very creative and the dancing sublime. It looks like Tinashe will continue her reign at the top of everyone’s R&B playlists.

The track is a Crunk&B song – a genre of hip hop music that originated in Memphis, Tennessee – with elements of West Coast hip hop, grime and late 1990s / early 2000s R&B. The thick bassline, club-friendly beat and pan-flute breakdown are complimented by Tinashe’s super-smooth vocals. She sings about a guy who broke her heart but now she’s glad to be free: “Kiss the old me goodbye, she’s dead and gone, dead and gone, dead and gone.”

In a recent interview with Billboard Magazine Tinashe talked about the filming of the video: “I feel like when you put yourself in a borderline dangerous situation, exciting things can happen. That shock value is always what you want to go for in a memorable video. We were over 100 feet in the air with no safety harnesses. Literally, we could have died. It was a thrill to make and I’m so excited for my fans to see this video. We really stepped it up, visually.”

All Hands on Deck is taken from Tinashe’s debut studio album Aquarius (2014).

American Oxygen – Rihanna

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Rihanna debuted her latest single American Oxygen at the NCAA March Madness Music Festival (a free three-day outdoor music festival in celebration of the NCAA Men’s Final Four in downtown Indianapolis.). During her performance she protested the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act. “Who’s feeling these new bullshit laws that they’re trying to pass over here? I say, ‘Fuck that shit,'” Rihanna told the crowd, “We’re just living our motherfucking lives.” After the festival performance she then dropped the official music video on the new streaming service TIDAL – which she co-owns along with a dozen or so music megastars.

The visual could be considered patriotic as Rihanna performs alone in front of the American flag, yet the visuals that flash in between Rihanna singing don’t make you feel good about America at all. The powerful images from America’s turbulent history include clips of Martin Luther King during his famous speech and his funeral procession, the 1969 Moon Landing, the Black Power salute at the 1968 Summer Olympics and 9/11. There are plenty of protest clips from Occupy Wall Street and the protests in Ferguson, Missouri to the UC Davis pepper-spraying incident and civil rights marches.

With American Oxygen Rihanna is showing a social and political consciousness that we haven’t really seen before from most of her past discography. The single is taken from her upcoming 8th studio album, following FourFiveSeconds and Bitch Better Have My Money.

Morrissey – Kiss Me A Lot

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Morrissey’s new music video for Kiss Me A Lot takes a very different tack than the visuals we are used to seeing from him. Directed by fashion photographer Sam Esty Rayner the video was premiered via Morrissey’s True to You zine. It features the cantankerous singer performing with his live band interspersed with shots of scantily clad women with the song title written over their bodies in red lipstick. It’s funny but it seems like the video ends up treating women like meat – which is a bit ironic really, isn’t it Moz? Or maybe that’s the whole point.

Morrissey has had a bit of a bad run recently. Two of his previous North American tours were cancelled due to illness and last October he revealed that he has undergone a series of treatments for cancer. “They have scraped cancerous tissues four times already, but whatever,” he told Spanish-language newspaper El Mundo. “If I die, then I die. And if I don’t, then I don’t. Right now I feel good. I am aware that in some of my recent photos I look somewhat unhealthy, but that’s what illness can do. I’m not going to worry about that. I’ll rest when I’m dead.”

Kiss Me a Lot is the 5th cut from Morrissey’s 10th solo studio album, World Peace Is None of Your Business (2014). The album did really well on the charts peaking at Nº2 in the UK and Nº14 in the US when it was released last summer.

Below is a poster for the singer’s upcoming Madison Square Garden show with Blondie — part of a larger tour of the US that starts on June 11 in New Orleans.

Furious 7 – See You Again
Wiz Khalifa (ft. Charlie Puth)

By | Films, Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Furious 7 opened in cinemas worldwide on April 3 and scored the fourth highest opening weekend of all time. Fans who went to the cinema heard See You Again when it played over a Paul Walker montage at the end of the film. The late actor tragically passed away in a car crash in November 2013 when he was just 40 years old.

After the blockbuster debut weekend, Vin Diesel decided that the only way to top the tribute at the film’s end was to share the video. He posted the video on Facebook with the words: Pablo, this weekend you turned the world into a family… Thanks for the love…

Just like the movie, the music video is also dedicated to Walker and the Facebook post featured a link where fans could donate to Walker’s Reach Out Worldwide charity – a charity thats provides critical help to those in crises. You can donate here.

The music video, taken from the film’s soundtrack honours Walker’s legacy as Brian O’Conner, showing footage over the last 14 years, from the most recent edition of the film and the six others as well. Charlie Puth, who sings on the track, shared the video with a tweet saying: “7 million hits in 2 hours. i know you are watching down on all of us paul, the whole world is thinking of you.”

Nick Jonas – Chains (The Wynwood Walls Edition)

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Nick Jonas is in chains yet again – this time for The Wynwood Walls Edition of his chart topping hit Chains. The video was released on March 31 – exactly eight months after the first version in July last year. Directed by Black Coffee and artist Peter Tunney the video was filmed at Miami’s famous Wynwood Walls.

There is no official word from Jonas as to why he decided to release two videos – perhaps he’s just giving his solo album’s lead single another shot. The first video was quite dark and gritty, this one is full of colour and is more like a street party than a serious, grown-up video. Nick cruises around in a light-up rickshaw, smokes cigars, parties with scantily clad girls and even crowd surfs. It’s a completely different vibe than the first video.

John Legend Dog Wedding (for Charity)

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Recently John Legend teamed up with the charity Omaze to raise money to build a new high school auditorium in his hometown of Springfield, Ohio – part of The “Show Me Campaign”. This music video is a promotion for this campaign, giving everyone a chance to win John Legend – not to keep him forever of course, but just for the day – to sing at your wedding or any special event.

We think Legend chose an adorably cute way to raise awareness for the campaign – he hosted and sung at a wedding for his two dogs, Putty and Pippa. He dressed the dogs up in full wedding regalia and serenaded them, even cutting some wedding cake for them. Then his wife Chrissy Teigen came in and ruined the whole thing! 🙂

To find out more about the campaign head on over to the Omaze website – or watch the video and click the link at the end to enter.

Evolution of Mom Dancing Part 2
Michelle Obama & Jimmy Fallon

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

The First Lady of Funk showed off her killer dance moves last week when she appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon for the Evolution of Mom Dancing. As part of the 5th anniversary of Let’s Move! and the #GimmeFive challenge, Michelle Obama challenged Jimmy Fallon to share five new mom dances. Fallon donned his best pink cardigan, white sneakers and ‘mom’ wig to join Mrs Obama for a full 2 plus minutes of cardio.

The dance moves are hilarious – like the “Shush and Tush,” the “Getting a Bag From Your Collection of Plastic Bags Under the Sink,” and the “Oh, My God! I Didn’t Know You Were Coming Here!” It was only when Fallon did the ‘Barak Obama’, making fun of her husband’s dance moves, that Mrs Obama drew the line.

Five years ago Mrs Obama launched Lets Move! a nationwide campaign to set children on the right course for a healthy future – or as their tagline says “America’s Move to Raise a Healthier Generation of Kids”. You can find out more about this campaign on the Let’s Move! website.

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Sia – Big Girls Cry

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

The 3rd part of Sia’s innovative video trilogy with “Dance Moms” star Maddie Ziegler has landed and WOW. Big Girls Cry is raw, powerful and a tad uncomfortable to watch. Some have called it ‘eerie’ and others ’tear-jerking’ but whatever you think of it there is no doubt that it’s a very human and powerful piece of film. Music website Fuse said Big Girls Cry could be the 39-year-old Australian’s most personal music video to date.

Big Girls Cry is the latest cut from Sia’s chart topping album 1000 Forms of Fear. Directed by Daniel Askill (who also co-directed the first two parts of the trilogy – Chandelier and Elastic Heart) Ziegler performs an interpretive dance that seems way beyond her 12 years. You mostly only see her from the shoulders up, but she manages to create as much magic as she did with her whole body in Chandelier.

Over the past year Sia has managed to create one of the most innovative pop campaigns we have ever witnessed. In 2013 she opted out of the whole ‘fame’ game saying it was like “an abusive mother-in-law”. She removed her face from all publicity materials and if she performs live you only get to see her back. Ziegler has become Sia’s face.

One of our favourite comments on YouTube said: Don’t try to find a meaning… Relax… Enjoy… Open your heart…And if you like it it’s ok…And if you don’t like it it’s ok…

Jane Birkin, Serge Gainsbourg – Je T’aime, Moi Non Plus

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

#ThrowbackThursday – Today we go back to 1969 with the world’s sexiest song. The song reaches a literal climax and mostly for this reason was banned from radio stations in Spain, Sweden, Brazil, the UK, Italy, Poland, Portugal, banned before 11 pm in France and banned from most stations in the US.

Je T’aime, Moi Non Plus was denounced by the Vatican and the L’Osservatore Romano – one report even claimed the Vatican excommunicated the record executive who released it in Italy. Jane Birkin says Gainsbourg called the Pope “our greatest PR man”. The track went to Nº1 all over Europe, staying on the UK charts for 31 weeks.

The title was inspired by a Salvador Dalí comment: “Picasso is Spanish, me too. Picasso is a genius, me too. Picasso is a communist, me neither”. Gainsbourg claimed it was an “anti-fuck” song about the desperation and impossibility of physical love.

The lyrics are written as a dialogue between two lovers during sex and are sung, spoken and whispered over a baroque organ and guitar track in C major. Media speculation at the time suggested that they had recorded live sex to which Gainsbourg told Birkin, “Thank goodness it wasn’t, otherwise I hope it would have been a long-playing record.”
