Nancy Sinatra – These Boots Are Made for Walkin’

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

#ThrowbackThursday – Today we go way back to 1966 when Nancy Sinatra was at Nº1 on the US and UK singles charts with ‘These Boots Are Made For Walking’. It was released towards the end of February and went straight to Nº1.

The song was written by Lee Hazlewood who encouraged Nancy to sing the song as if she were “a sixteen-year-old girl who fucks truck drivers.” It worked because the song was a huge hit and has been covered so many times by hundreds of artists in all sorts of genres: metal, pop, rock, punk rock, country, dance, and industrial.

The recording was made with the help of Los Angeles session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew – Hal Blaine on drums, Al Casey, Tommy Tedesco, and Billy Strange on guitars, Ollie Mitchell, Roy Caton and Lew McCreary on horns, Carol Kaye on electric bass, and Chuck Berghofer on double bass, providing the notable bass line.

It was the second single to be taken from Nancy’s debut album Boots and a follow-up to her minor hit So Long, Babe. In 2006, Pitchfork Media selected it as the 114th best song of the 1960s. Critic Tom Breihan described the song as “maybe the finest bitchy kiss-off in pop history.”

Enrique Iglesias – Let Me Be Your Lover ft. Pitbull

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull have teamed up for the infectious single Let Me Be Your Lover and the music video is such a laugh! You’ll be tapping your toes to this and smiling (unless you’re in a coma). The track is the latest single from Iglesias’ 10th studio album Sex + Love.

The music video, directed by Alejandro Pérez, is a whole lot of fun and features the pair as marionette puppets dancing and driving around Los Angeles, plus live performance shots.

The formidable duo are surely a match made in Latin-American pop heaven. They collaborated on the huge hit I’m a Freak, which charted in the Top 10 all over the world. Pitbull is also currently co-headlining Iglesias’ Sex + Love Tour, which started in February last year and comes to an end on March 7 in San Juan.

Jess Glynne – Hold My Hand

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

The new song and video from Jess Glynne – Hold My Hand – will make you feel goooood! This upbeat, house-pop track is packed with positivity. The music video, directed by by Emil Nava (Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora, Jessie J) is pretty feel-good as well. It’s not complicated, or arty, just friends having some fun in the desert.

The Grammy-award winning singer (Best Dance Recording for her Clean Bandit collaboration Rather Be) will release Hold My Hand on March 23, through Atlantic. The single gives us a first taste of her debut album, slated for a summer release, which Glynne says has lots of “upbeat soul”.

The single follows last summer’s Gorgon City produced Right Here as well as her second collaboration with Clean Bandit Real Love.

Glynne is nominated for 3 Brit Awards this year, including Best British Single and Best Video. She will start a UK tour next month with Clean Bandit which will include a night at London’s Alexandra Palace.

Jack White – That Black Cat Licorice

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Jack White has released an awesome interactive video for his latest single That Black Cat Licorice. It’s actually 3 videos in one and you can flip between the videos as the song plays. You can change the video by holding down the ‘3’ or ‘B’ keys on your keyboard.

If you just hit play without pressing 3 or B, you will see a surreal animated video, directed by James Blagden, which shows White attempting to seduce an Egyptian Queen, cutting out his tongue and lots of crazy dancing bats.

If you hit the 3 on your keyboard whilst watching you’ll watch a live-action, moody video, directed by and starring White himself. If you hold down the B key whilst watching you’ll see another live-action video, directed by Brad Holland, that is basically just slow-mo footage of people head banging. Swapping between the 3 and B keys makes for really interesting viewing, they mix so well together, playing in conjunction perfectly.

The track is from White’s latest album Lazaretto, which was released almost a year ago and is still going strong.

Florence + The Machine
What Kind Of Man

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Classic rock firepower, searing guitar riffs and high-flying vocals – Florence + the Machine is back! What Kind of Man, the first single from their new album, now has a cinematic visual. A full chorus of back up singers brings extra drama to the track which is about the dangers of love and sex with the wrong kind of man.

The video matches the storyline perfectly – be warned, there’s plenty of disturbing images like full on car crashes and scenes with circling men. There’s nothing vulgar – Florence is too subtle for that – but the message certainly gets across.

The new album, How Big How Blue How Beautiful, is the first since 2011’s Ceremonials and release is set for June 1st in the UK via Island Records and June 2nd in the US via Republic Records. Ceremonials focussed on water, death and escapism whilst the new album theme’s are more in the here and now. Florence said: “The new album became about trying to learn how to live, and how to love in the world rather than trying to escape from it, which is frightening because I’m not hiding behind anything but it felt like something I had to do.”

Omarion Ft. Chris Brown & Jhene Aiko – Post To Be

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Post To Be, the winter jam that sounds like a summer vacation, has finally got a music video. Omarion, Chris brown and Jhene Aiko have a dance-off and it also stars a white Ferrari…Produced by DJ Mustard this bright, light and fun track is taken from Omarion’s 2014 album Sex Playlist.

Omarion and Chris Brown might win at the dance-off – the dancing is excellent – but Jhene Aiko steals the show with her gorgeous vocals, plus she also got to say the line “but he got to eat the booty like groceries”! Directed by Jay Ahn and co-directed by Omarion and Taz, this video is four minutes of perfectly crisp mirror-dancing. The three musicians take turns showing off their moves with Omarion just loving the white Ferrari.

Omarion has noticeably progressed from boy-band heartthrob to a mature artist and his voice has gained age and character. First famous as a member of the hugely popular group B2K, he has released four solo albums, including Sex Playlist.

Falco – Rock Me Amadeus

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

#ThrowbackThursday –  Born on this day (February 19), Falco (Johann Holzel), who had the 1986 chart-topping single Rock Me Amadeus. Falco was the first-ever Austrian act to score a Nº1 hit single in both the US and the UK. In fact, the song was a Nº1 hit in 10 countries and a Top 10 hit in 7 others.

Falco became the first German-speaking artist to be credited with a Nº1 single in all mainstream US pop singles charts : the Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box Top 100 Singles. (Prior to Falco, 99 Luftballons by Nena got to Nº1 on Cashbox, but peaked at Nº2 on the Billboard Hot 100). Rock Me Amadeus would later be ranked Nº87 in VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the 80s and Nº44 in VH1’s 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders. Falco was a flash in the pan in the US, and after this major hit he sort of faded away – but he was a major star in Europe and a source of fascination for many.

Falco Triple(1)

Naturally, the song is about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), also an Austrian, who performed his first ‘tour’ at the tender age of five. The basic concept of the song is the suggestion that Mozart was the rock’n’roll rebel of his day – some of the lyrics reflect this:

He was the first punk ever to set foot on this earth.
He was a genius from the day of his birth.
He could play the piano like a ring and a bell
And everybody screamed: Come on, rock me Amadeus
With a bottle of wine in one hand and a woman in the other
His mind was on rock and roll and having fun
Because he lived so fast he had to die so young
But he made his mark in history
Still everybody says: Rock me Amadeus

The music video mixes things up a bit – using elements of Mozart’s time along with the 1980s contemporary society. Falco is shown in a 20th-century-style dinner jacket, walking past people in eighteenth-century formal wear. Later, he is shown dressed as Mozart being held on the shoulders of men dressed in 1980s-style motorcycle-riding attire. At the end, the two crowds mix.

Falco died in a car crash on 6 February 1998, just a few days before his 41st birthday.

Sevyn Streeter – Don’t Kill The Fun
ft. Chris Brown

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Sevyn Streeter keeps the party rocking in the undeniably fun music video for Don’t Kill the Fun, featuring and directed by Chris Brown. It’s all fast-cars-underground-parties and fancy footwork. The track is the lead single from Streeter’s highly anticipated debut album.

In the colourful video, directed by Chris Brown and produced by Riveting Entertainment, we see Streeter racing her Lamborghini before starting a party in a graffitied warehouse. Both Streeter and Brown show off some great dance moves. “It’s been a lot of fun. It’s exactly what the song is, don’t kill the fun,” said Streeter. She certainly brings the party to life, and also wows us with her powerful and versatile vocals.

Our favourite Lyrics:
Let’s be undeniable
If you wanna live it better live it
Make tonight unforgettable
And we won’t stop rocking ’til they call the cops

Taylor Swift – Style

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Taylor Swift has finally released her music video for Style and it’s stunning! It’s a story about a red-lipped girl and a James Dean guy… Directed by Kyle Newman, the whole video is just beautiful, it’s picture postcard stuff, splendidly cinematic. The video has only been out for 24 hours and already has nearly 6 million views!

Style has already gained critical acclaim from many with The Observer calling it a “percolating funk-pop number that satisfies on every level”. The New York Times declared it as the album’s high mark and NOW Magazine also called it the top track from the album.

The video stars actor Dominic Sherwood who you might recognize from his role as Christian Ozera in Vampire Academy. (He is also Taylor’s friend Sarah Hyland’s new boyfriend). This fan favorite song off Taylor’s  best-selling album 1989 shows the pair in beautiful settings, it’s all very ethereal as well as very real. Very cool video.

People will surely be gossiping though that the song is about Taylor’s ex boyfriend, One Direction star Harry Styles. Did you notice the paper airplane necklace at the beginning of the video (at 0.14)? It’s the one Harry gave her.

Style is the 3rd single to be released from 1989 (it’s also the third song on the album).

Van Halen – Jump

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

#ThrowbackThursday. We go back to 1984 when Van Halen scored their first Nº1 hit in the US with Jump! It was also a top 10 hit around the world and the only Nº1 with David Lee Roth as lead singer. It was released in December 1983 as the lead single from their album 1984. It is the only single the group released in their career to reach Nº1 on the US Hot 100 chart. It broke the mold of their earlier songs – mainly in its rolling synth line.

The song is their most popular and most instantly recognisable composition – perhaps because the sound embodies both of the genres that were most associated with the 1980s in America: synth-driven pop and “arena”-style metal.

The music video was directed by David Lee Roth and won Best Stage Performance at the MTV Video Music Awards that year. Compared to music videos today, it was very straightforward just showing the band performing at a mock concert, but it was the bands personality that brought the whole thing to life.

In an interview with Mix magazine, Daryl Hall said that the Hall & Oates song Kiss On My List was an influence on this one: ”[Eddie] Van Halen told me that he copied the synth part from ‘Kiss on My List’ and used it in ‘Jump.’ I don’t have a problem with that at all.”

Avril Lavigne – Give You What You Like

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Avril Lavigne is back! After taking an extended break due to a mystery illness Avril has premiered the full music video for Give You What You Like, the 5th single from her 2013 self-titled LP. The song makes up part of the soundtrack from the forthcoming Lifetime movie Babysitter’s Black Book which premieres on February 21.

The video is largely made up of highlights from the movie interspersed with footage of Lavigne. It shows a side of Lavigne that most haven’t seen before – chilled, laid-back, less make up, more introspective – generally more mature.

The track will help to raise money for the Avril Foundation – a charity set up by Lavigne to support young people with disabilities and life-threatening illnesses.

Miley Cyrus –Tongue Tied

By | Films, Music Videos | No Comments

Over the last couple of years Miley Cyrus has been inching closer to pornography with her skimpy outfits, scandalous dance moves and steamy music videos. Now it looks like she will actually be appearing in a pornography festival. According to a report today in the New York Post, the Wrecking Ball singer has submitted her short film, Tongue Tied, to the upcoming NYC Porn Film Festival that begins February 27.

Directed by Quentin Jones, the video is nowhere near as bad as Fifty Shades of Grey, there is no sex and Cyrus does not appear nude, she keeps her nipples and bottom covered. However, it is full of suggestive bondage imagery. Festival founder Simon Leahy said of the film: “It’s a pop take on S&M. She’s starting to become more of a contemporary artist.”

The NYC Porn Film Festival will feature amateur and professional work from international filmmakers. It won’t look like you might expect, a seedy, run down old theatre venue, instead it’s more a spacious-gallery-style where viewers can walk round and discuss the various ‘art’ on view.

Cyrus has recently contributed a cover of Melanie Safka’s Look What They’ve Done to My Song, Ma for Lina Esco’s forthcoming film Free the Nipple, which is about a group of women lobbying for reform of US censorship laws on female nudity.

Madonna – Living For Love

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Madonna is the Queen of the Big Top in her lush, arresting video for Living for Love. It has a great throwback vibe as well, reminding us of her iconic Take a Bow video. It’s her best work in 10 years! We’ve lost count of how many times we’ve replayed this!

The stunning clip was directed by the French duo known as J.A.C.K. (Julien Choquart and Camille Hirigoyen) and edited by Danny B. Tull, who worked on 4 Minutes and many other Madonna videos.

For those who don’t like bullfighting there is a Nietzsche quote that ends the video: “Man is the cruelest animal. At tragedies, bullfights and crucifixions, he has felt best on earth and when he invented hell for himself that was his very heaven.” Funnily though, the German philosopher’s name is spelt wrong – someone on Madonna’s team should have caught this by now?

The video debuted exclusively on Snapchat – the first video ever to do so – but is now available on Madonna’s Youtube and Vevo accounts. Living for Love is the first single from Madonna’s highly anticipated Rebel Heart album, due out March 10. Several tracks from the album have been made available though after it fell victim to an early leak from a hacker who was eventually tracked down and arrested in Israel.
